That's your opinion.......Memphis BBQ is the best bar none!!
Cozy Corner has the best ribs you'll ever sink your teeth into. Payne's is the best sandwich for lunch. Both holes in the wall but both very, very tasty............:D MEM ribs are good, but try the two places above. Sounds like you've never left MEM. Believe it or not, there is life beyond Poplar and Beale St. :) |
The fries at "Hires" in SLC are great!
And, who doesn't like that "secret sauce"? Secret sauce...Does the word "secret", cum from secrete? |
Best TX BBQ is at Joe Allen's in Abilene Texas near the muni airport. (For all those who did T-37 cross country legs through Texas)

You may be right and for the 8 guys that live near KC great, but for the 4800 others that frequent Memphis or live there good pork BBQ intel is useful. Or is KC that much better that I should drive the 10 or so hours to try it out while I'm in Memphis for the afternoon hub turning or training?

Fortunately for me (and hopfeully you too someday) I am senior enough to never set foot in MEM except for recurrent training and an occasional Jumpseat home. |

As you said, this thread started out as MEM catering and really had nothing to do with BBQ................but as always these threads go off on many tangents drifiting from the original subject. Back to your point, MEM has some fine BBQ places, but the locals (many of whom haven't been West of the Mississippi river or North of Dyersberg ) think that MEM BBQ is all there is..................I was just pointing out that what 4600 of the 4800 FedEx Pilots already know..............There is Life beyond MEM ( Actually a better life) and in My opinion there is Better BBQ too..........
Fortunately for me (and hopfeully you too someday) I am senior enough to never set foot in MEM except for recurrent training and an occasional Jumpseat home. We're talking BBQ in Memphis and yes I still believe it is the best and yes I have been outside of Memphis. I try to eat BBQ everywhere I go because I enjoy it so much. I will try out your joint in MO if I ever get the oportunity but so far KC BBQ hasnt come close to Memphis Q......... |
Your right Redeye, should have known better about asking a pilot message board about BBQ...since I'm laying over in MEM, I'll just head over to Corky's for a sandwich, and get the salmon for the flight. Thanks for all who put in their input.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.........as for MEM BBQ vs KC or Texas, let's just be gentlemen and agree to disagree. But if you are ever in KC........(actually Grandview or Belton Mo) you owe it to yourself to try "Sneeds BBQ". It is an old farmer who opens his restaurant (an old converted barn) only during the warm weather months. There are no reservations, they don't use plates and the parking lot is dirt and grass infront of the old farm house. Everyone sits At big picnic style tables (in other words there are no private tables or booths). The waiter/waitress lays down a big piece of wax paper in front of you and splats a scoop of beans and slaw on it. They keep coming by with large cuts of BBQ beef brisket, Ribs, Chicken and Ham. Everything gets dumped on your wax paper. Nothing elegant about it but it is the best BBQ I've experienced anywhere including MEM and I've had my share of Rendezvous dry rub ribs and Neelys and even corky's (which is overated) When I think of BBQ elegance never comes to mind........come to think of it, nothing elegant about MEM either. Sorry, couldn't resist. |

That wasn't my intent, but since you brought it up.........there is a reason that over 70% of the 4900 crewmembers choose to commute...........plain and simple MEM sux. I lived there for 6 + years.....................

Sorry, couldn't resist. As for the BBQ, Memphis has a certain style. I am not sure that it is fair comparison, it is apples and oranges. If given my choice of ANY sort of bbq ribs, all of you can have your styles, I like the way they do them in Thailand better, and also Jamaica. Mexico also have some VERY good varieties of this type of food, and let's not forget Polynesia! So, you all can fight over your mid-west cities, (all of which styles are good, in their own way), and you can look for me somewhere in Southeast Asia enjoying REALLY good ribs! |

First, where do YOU live that you think is so hot? Maybe you should list the city so we can have fun poking at it too?

Dreamland Ribs. The original is in Tuscaloosa. When the old man (pictured) died, turned out he owed a bunch of taxes, so his heirs sold some franchises to pay the IRS. They all good.

I know this is thread drift, but the thread has drifted this far so what's a little more, eh?
When in San Antonio, try Rudy's http://rudys.com/. I plan to be at the Leon Springs location on April 22, 2007 for those who'd like to pig out with me. Let's see if anybody can out-eat my brother-in-law. :) |

So i take it nobody likes interstate bbq down towards olive branch?
|
bbq
Germantown Commissary is the best bbq sandwich in Memphis, no questions asked.
Leonard's has the best dry ribs, as Rendezvous is like Corky's in that they're a tourist trap. Yes, Memphis is a bit dumpy, but that is what gives it character. If you like good food, vibrant culture, friendly people, and no opportunity, then its a great place to live. I miss it, proud to call it my hometown, but would never live there again. I guess you could say its a "love/hate relationship", which is a typical response among Southerners living outside the region. Oh yeh, Memphis ATC is quite friendly too. |

He doesn't have any orange tic-tacs in his flight case. If he does, and he pops 5-10 of 'em, in 20 minutes you'll be slowing down to the foot and opening the window. Over the ETP. At altitude, it's a physiological freak of nature. We could win the Iraq war on that stuff. :D |
I'm wit TonyC; Neely's off of Mt Moriah is some d@mn good BBQ, although I'm partial to NC BBQ since that's what I grew up on. Thanks for the other listings of the BBQ joints guys, it'll give me something to do when I get stuck in MEM.
The Germantown Commissary is good but their chocolate silk pie is what I really like there. The only other woman to make a chocolate pie that tastes anything like that was my mother. |
Tops BBQ
I think the pulled pork at Tops BBQ in MEM is, well, tops in my book. :)

Hehe, hadn't noticed, but I'm getting close! Oops, there I go again! 946 now! ;) Do I win a prize or something? |
We'll have to start an APC tradition for those who reach that milestone. Any ideas? How about a couple of flying lessons here? ;)
PS: I think it's too late to worry about thread drift. We'll just have to suffer the consequences like a real pilot. |
