GSO Hub Construction update
From the Biz Journal:
Steel is out of the ground on what will be a three-story, 425,000-square-foot building that will house the "sort" operations, where packages are sorted based on destination, Dyer said. Work has also begun on the administration building for FedEx, which will be the second building to come out of the ground.
Johnson said FedEx is still hoping to begin operations in June of 2009. The airport plans to turn over control of the sort building, one of eight buildings that will be on the 165-acre FedEx campus, in September, at which point FedEx will begin installing and testing equipment, a process that takes more than a year.
About 80 workers are on the construction site right now, Dyer said, and that number will reach between 400 and 500 as work progresses.
Among the biggest challenges so far, Dyer said, has been getting materials delivered and the heavy steel fabricated, but he indicated the process overall has run smoothly.
Roadwork is still ongoing at the airport, Johnson said, and construction of the new runway and taxiways should be completed by early 2009.
