Out of the brown pool

For those interested and keeping track, I was called and offered a conditional job offer contingent upon the drug test.

Applied within days of the application coming back online in January - or I should say re-applied because my first app went in as SO/FE in September. Interviewed at the end of February. Pool letter exactly one week later via US Mail. Phone call from HR exactly one month to the day from receiving the pool letter. Now wondering how long till a class date. I am hoping to get into that April 23rd class.

Good luck to everyone. Rock on!

1800 RVR 04-05-2007 07:33 PM

Congrats and welcome aboard! :D

peterpilot379 04-05-2007 07:45 PM

Brown,

What was your available start date and what's your background? I got the pool letter on 5 Feb but can't start until 1 May. Hoping to get a call soon.

Brown 04-05-2007 08:30 PM

peterpilot,

My available date is basically two weeks out from anytime going forward. I am currently flying for another airline, so I really just need to give notice and start with UPS.

I have a 737 type, as well as two others from regional airline flying. I have 6000 hours or so, with about 4500 PIC, two years as check airman.

Anybody know what it means that my online app now has another section to fill out? It also says that I am suppose to be in Louisville on April 23rd. Is that my tenative class date? I haven't heard anything official yet from UPS? But I just noticed that on my application.

peterpilot379 04-05-2007 08:33 PM

I'd call HR about that and Congrats by the way.

1jetpilot 04-05-2007 08:40 PM

Does anyone know if UPS is mandating new hires relocate to ANC? Can we commute as an option and live somewhere on the west coast? What are the chances of getting ONT as a new hire? Will they ever reopen their online application? I could not seem to get into it and called the job hotline. They said that it will open soon.

Brown,

That means you will be in that class on the 23rd. When you pass your drug screen, HR will call you and direct you to the website you already found and ask you to fill out the additional information prior to class. Congrats, and welcome aboard!

See you in SDF on the 23d.

Online app 26 Jan, Psych test a week or so later, called for 26 Mar interview about a week after that, phone call with good news 2 days after interview, wizz quiz 3 Apr, phone call 5 Apr for MD11 ANC class. 20 in the class.

Not really much time in the pool...

Quals - 737 type, BE40, heavy lockheed experience, current int'l mil AC. All military experience w/ most PIC instructing.

Here's my Q: how hard is it to jumpseat to ANC? You get to reserve 10 days out, but can you get bumped?

Brown - I'd expect your phone to ring very soon.

My philosophy on ONT vs. ANC - if you have heavy, international time, you will probably go to ANC. I've noticed the regional guys going to the 757. So, I guess if you want to go to ONT, it's to your advantage if you don't have the heavy, international time.

peterpilot379 04-06-2007 05:19 AM

Beaker,

A little info for you in the "SDF to ANC" thread under "Cargo".

Beaker,

Our contract says that if you are bumped off of the jumpseat that the company can not hold it against you. However, on probation you are not afforded the benefits and protections of the contract and Union.

The good news is that you'll probably be on reserve in ANC which means a 15 day block. You'll only have to jumpseat once a month. If you are a mil reservist you'll be able to maintain all benefits and credit for probation as long as you do at least 8 days of reserve. Commuting to ANC on probation is not the best scenario IMO. But you gotta do whatcha gotta do.

aseweepay 04-06-2007 06:32 AM

Congrats "BROWN", heard there are 19 of us (above post says 20 so I could
be wrong) going to class on 4/23. I was offered 757Z SDF, 757 MIA or MD11
ANC. Interviewed in JAN, pee and class offer in March. Look forward to
meeting you guys/gals there.

Do you think flying Freddy gave you any significant advantage with UPS? You guard or AD?

You wouldn't by chance be Randy Heisey from TCM, would you? Tried to PM you but you haven't posted enough yet.

Brown 04-06-2007 09:06 AM

FWIW, I don't have any heavy time (just the 737) and the most of the international time that I have is down to the islands and the Dominican Republic and a lot of Mexico. Wonder if that is enough to get to ANC?

I will gladly take any position, but my family and I are hoping for Anchorage.

How long will I be on reserve in ANC?

Is it true that ANC upgrades could be less than 5 years?

Anybody wanna go in partners on a seaplane up there :D

ryane946 04-06-2007 09:47 AM

Out of the brown pool
You were swimming in a brown pool. That's gross dude!

AKPlacer 04-06-2007 10:58 AM

congrats

Brown...congrats!

I took the pee test on 3/29. The next day my on-line app showed "you have an appointment at 802 Grade Ln on Monday April 23rd at 8 am." However, it has been over a week now and still no follow up call from HR. Hopefully I'll see you guys/gals on the 23rd.

You won't be able to hold reserve. The only long block schedules are reserve and it's going senior.

After the last displacement bid, the most junior capt. position up there went to a 9/00 hire. I guess in the future it could go less than 5 years since UPS didn't hire from 01 - 04.

Have fun in class and keep us updated!

AKPlacer 04-06-2007 11:46 AM

called

UPS HR has a heart. They returned my call, so I can have a happier weekend. I'm in the April 23rd class. No determination on my seat type yet. I want ANC but have no heavy time, so they are still deciding my fate. Icing on the cake if I get it, but happy either way!

Notable bits of info:

20 in the class. 12 MD-11s to ANC, 6 757z SDF, 1 757 MIA, 1 757 ONT. Also the hotel is different again...Hampton Inn on Phillips Lane.

1800 RVR 04-06-2007 11:51 AM

Congrats AKPlacer, and welcome aboard to you as well!

Jet Jockey 2003 04-06-2007 12:07 PM

AK pacer,

In the 23rd class also. look forward to seeing you there. Told to expect MD11 ANC. Already have plenty of Intl and heavy time, so I'm probably getting ANC to get even more time in that enviroment. Would prefer the lower 48 and a different A/C. But, we'll see.

On another note I'm driving down from Chicago, so I'll have wheels for the days off.

See you there.

14LEDs 04-06-2007 12:12 PM

AK, Congrats... Jet... good deal... I will be driving up from TN also, so there should be no shortage of wheels. I was also notified of the new hotel. I wonder if the whole class will be at the same place???
So far it looks like Beaker, Brown, AKplacer, Aseweepay, Jet jocky, and mylelf are in the 23rd... anybody else?

Jet Jockey 2003 04-06-2007 12:14 PM

14LEDS. Have they hinted what ac and base to you yet?

14LEDs 04-06-2007 12:20 PM

Nope, no clue, I am hopingfor SDF, but after the numbers I just saw posted... I am not hopeful. I have all narrowbody time with limited Intl exp. Only Mexico, Carribean, Canada... It sounds like they already have a plan for us though... I just wish they would share.

I'm very happy at UPS and congratulate all you guys. But don't get used to UPS Mgt having a heart!

Hampton Inn!? Wow, you are lucky. Those are usually nice and definetly a lt better than the hotels on Hurstbourne that they have used in the past. You'll be withing 10 minutes of the training center.

Freightpuppy is a smart gal, but when I checked last bid period the junior capt lines were all long blocks of reserve at ANC. They were also pretty junior on the FO side as well. It's a growing domicile so things are in flux. I'd live in ANC as a newhire if at all possible.

You guys all just won the lottery. The only catch is you can't collect anthing until April 23, 2008 when you get off probation and start getting paid like professionals!

Jet Jockey 2003 04-06-2007 12:33 PM

Would love to move to ANC, but the better 1/2 won't go. You know the old rule.

IF SHE'S NOT HAPPY, YOUR NOT HAPPY

or maybe I could just move and find me a local large eskimo lady with no teeth. Hmm? Or how about one of those hippie chicks from snow city that don't own razors.

I totally disagree. My entire class went to ONT (757), and nearly all of us had a lot of heavy, international experience. You'll get assigned where UPS needs the bodies, and right now ANC is where they most need the pilots.

If I had been able to attend my originally scheduled class 2 weeks earlier, I would have been assigned the MD-11 in either SDF or ANC. Needs of the company, and luck of the draw in my opinion.

Brown 04-06-2007 01:34 PM

Oh boy. It is gonna be a long weekend for me.

My app says that I have an appointment in Louisville on the 23rd, but I still haven't heard anything officially. I even called, but I haven't heard back yet.

My current gig is flying a B737 for one of the legacy airlines, so my wait isn't that bad. I am trying to figure out how and when to turn in my 2-week notice though.

I also am bringing wheels down to training, and it is a long drive for me from the Northeast.

Is there a thread for information on training? How long is training? Where do we stay? Schedules? Can we jumpseat home for the weekends?

I hear we do a ride along in a package car delivering packages. That will be pretty cool.

Looking forward to seeing you guys (and gals)! :-)

Archie,
Actually she is right. I have had students of mine get switched to different airplanes while in sims. UPS thinks they may know where they are going, but change numbers and seats at the last minute. Only they know why, when I ask they don't know:rolleyes: Reality is: They think they are hiring for a class of MD-11, so the Training Fleet heads look at the experience level and they let HR call them in based on what they think will happen. It changes, and all of you go ONT. Oh well, they missed the mark. But we'll get the next class. :o This is where you are correct, about filling with any body coming in, yep, it's ANC, really it is, unless its SDF ......but they thought it was going to be ONT (which is now filled by your class) so the RJ folks get to go to ANC. Kinda funny really.

Brown... here is what I know as of the moment, maybe someone will chime in that has been through in the past month or so.
No info on training other than it is 8-10 weeks. Weekends are "free" until SIM (which can be scheduled day or night). The hotel was mentioned above, ours (23rd class) was moved to the Hampton Inn by the airport.

1st week is HR stuff and your "ride along", 2ed is BI..., then I assume everyone splits into AC training.
They made a point of telling me I can JS when I get my company ID, which I can only assume is early in the process.

Man, I hope you hear soon, Time is ticking........ Good Luck!

You'll get the ID in the first few days. We started on a Thursday and most had them by Tues or Wed. So you should be able to get home that first weekend since you're starting on a Monday BUT you have to turn in your passport sometime early in training to get the proper visas. You can wait to hand it in but it needs to be back in your possession by the time you start IOE, so beware. It's really laid back. The ride along was ok but glad I don't have to do it everyday. Training timeline is not set in stone we '757' guys from the first March class were sent home after indoc...still here and don't spin up till the 11th. We could have stayed in SDF the entire time with hotel provided and we have been getting paid. So I guess we were lucky to get a first year vacation. Of course, on year one pay I couldn't afford to go anywhere but my guard unit to try and make some $. The Hampton is a 7-8 min drive to the training center. Welcome to Brown!

I don't think so. I know several folks that had other military backgrounds. I think that having worldwide experience helped get the interview, and I think having heavy experience puts you on the short list for ANC.

I am not guard or AD... the other option would be reserve. Formerly AD (not in Fred).

No. I was at TCM from 98-01, then Air ETC. That name doesn't ring a bell so I may not have crossed paths with you.

Sorry to all about the personal laundry on posted for all, perhaps I'll be able to PM after this...

And thanks to all with wheels on the 23d, in advance...

I will be there on the 23rd. Told MD-11 Anchorage, but as we all know, until after the first year, who knows.

My time line was:

late Dec call for interview
Jan 15 interview
Feb 5 pool letter
March 28 contingent call for drug test
April 5 class date.

I did not do any of the "new" online assessment process. I had an application in from 2004, then updated every 6 months or so, then did the big update in 8/06 and was able to get a userid and login for the more detailed app.

Thanks to everyone who shares their info/experience on here. It helps to know a little about what's going on.

Good luck to everyone still trying to apply and looking forward to seeing the other people in class on the 23rd.

12 days for pilots and mechanics. You can always get bumped, but we have a lot of seats going that way. Almost never a rider out of EWR or RFD. Several flights a day in and out of SDF

These guys are going to be FOs so I looked at the FO awards. I couldn't hold reserve up there on the MD11 in 07-03. Where did you get your info?
