Immunization for new job

I start training soon for a new job (international cargo) and they want me to bring in my immunization record. They said if you don't have this, necessary immunizations will be provided for you.

That being said, what shots are they looking for? Also, anyone get sick after getting their shots?

BluePAX 03-26-2019 02:28 PM

Just take the shots. Measles is going through Hong Kong at the moment, who knows what will be next.

Blackhawk 03-26-2019 02:37 PM

Probably yellow fever. That seems to be the one many people lack.

Yellow fever, generally. When I got mine, the nurse who administered it also recommended typhoid and hepatitis A. I decided to get those also. To my surprise, my company reimbursed me for all of them (not just the yellow fever that they told me I needed), even though I didn't even request reimbursement.

Appropriately treated in a first world hospital the mortality of yellow fever is only 20%. Are you seriously worried about your arm aching for a few days?

Great, thanks. I presume that I'll have to get HEP A, Tdap, yellow, and typhoid. I was also curious if rabies was something other people got in case they ventured outside the hotel on a long layover?

Yellow Fever is the only required shot. Its unavailable, as the facility that manufactured the vaccine has been unavailable since early last year. A French substitute is in use.

Some countries placed a 10 year limit on the shot; by international agreement, all nations are to recognize a lifetime value for the shot.

You're best off getting immunized for other pathogens. Numerous outbreaks occur around the world, and if you're flying in Africa, regular multiple outbreaks of cholera and other diseases are common.

All the standard vaccinations should be current, including your tetanus shot.

Can you get sick when getting shots? Yes. I have. You should still get them.

Appreciate the response. Definitely getting all the shots, just was debating getting them before or during training. I'll look more into the yellow fever immunization. Thanks for the info

I got flu-like symptoms about a week after yellow fever that lasted about a week.

I assume that will happen to me as well. Thanks for the heads up.

You may get ill for a brief period, but it's not that common, and if you do, it's generally a brief fever like symptom that passes quickly.

I had a few in my class that felt under the weather for a few days, one that said he felt like he had the flu, and another that just didn't feel good, but it passed in a couple of days. The instructors were aware that reactions could happen and warned us.

Good luck, I hope that you make it through smoothly.

Find a good travel clinic associated with a hospital. Google’s your friend. I found it invaluable for decades.

Aren’t you worried about getting autism?

Absolutely. And yes, EVERY immunization has the potential to have side effects, they give you that information before you get the injection, but yellow fever is generally the only required one. You ought to get caught up on your TdAp too if you’ve let it expire. Cholera is not worth doing, it’s an ineffective immunization with a fair incidence of unpleasant reactions. The new oral cholera is better.

Rabies? Only if you are a spelunker and probably not even then.

And the “Wikipedia photo” is from the CDC, although Wikipedia may have cribbed it from them since it is public domain. There’s another one there for Africa too, if you are interested.

On the recommendation of my doctor, I took 400mg ibuprofen every 8 hours for 3 days, when I got a yellow fever shot. (the second time)

It helped a lot.

Yellow Fever vaccine used to be given every 10 years, but as of 2014 they changed it to once in a lifetime.

Do Kalitta and Atlas pay for these shots?

It's in the Atlas CBA that the company will pay for immunization

While you're at the travel clinic, see if they'll write you a prescription for antibiotics for traveler's diarrhea. It seems to be a fairly common practice, and if you eat or drink the wrong thing on a layover, you're going to want that. The first dose knocks it right out, and the last two doses make sure it stays gone.
