Who does everybody think AMZ is going to buy outright to get a 121 certificate? It not a question of if but when? Instant aircraft and aircrews. Fred has contracted drivers and unionized aircrews. UPS Evergreen, Ryan, Orion to fly UPS owned aircraft until 1988. AMZ already owns stakes in the ACMI's they use. Who gets dumped and who gets bought?

Not going to happen....AZ is happy using the DHL model of using contractor's. Straight low ball whipsaw bidding. AZ does not have to take on unions, contract negotiations, inherit retirement plans etc...never happen.

all their Amazon vans are third party contractors. They seem to like the contractor model

FDX does the same thing. Only union shops are Aircrews and Maintenance I believe.

UPS used that model 6 or 7 years using contracted aircrews. Didn’t they run into problems scheduling because certain aircraft could only fly with certain carriers. I recall hearing something like that. I feel if AMZ is buying their own aircraft, there is a plan to become a 121 carrier. This peak is going to be a huge test for their current network.

Tell that to the regionals who are offering 100's of thousands of dollars to get those low time pilots. The landscape has changed significantly over the past 10 years. The whipsaw model is no longer viable. The majors are hiring like never before. The pandemic only served to accelerate the pilot shortage. We have long time captains leaving my airline to go to the majors. The low balling strategy of the past will not work.
