UPS and A&P license
I was wondering what your guys/gals thoughs are on this.
My buddy just got hired at UPS and used to be an A&P. He thinks this helped him out getting the interview/job. When he told me this I started to think about it and now that I do, there are quite a bit of pilots I have talked to at work that are also former A&Ps. Anyone on here at UPS and a former A&P? Do you guys/gals think it's a plus at all or is it just a coincidence? Whaddya all think? Thanks.

If it is open for anyone I would say you would have to look at causal and coincidence.
I'll bet a higher percentage of the people hired have college degrees and a pilot license.
I think it is mostly coincidence as a very high number of civilian pilots (compared to the general population) are A&P's.
Does it help, probably some just like a high percentage of dentist's (if they applied) would get hired. It demonstrates a good work ethic and ability to follow directions.

Freightpippy,
as far as holding an A&P would help anyone getting a job somewhere, i can tell you from my own experience that it will. Although i was never directly hired somewhere because of that, but i could tell that they were impressed and happy to be hiring some one with some knowledge of another aspect of aviation. It certainly gave me an edge and extra advantage.
But as far as UPS is concerned, i meet all the quals(int'l, trans oceanic, transport, bachelor's degree, lots of turbine pic) and yet the A&P has not yet gotten me an interview. I applied on 4/10/07, again, and went to a job fair on 5/19/07 and my res and app. both show the A&P, and nothing yet. So i hope that answers your question. I am still hoping and waiting to get the psych. evel one of these days. My app has been "active" since i applied and been updating it regularly hoping to trigger something in the computer ;-)

I think UPS does a great job of hiring unique individuals with unique backgrounds. I think they look for the qualifications first and then anything that sets the person apart. Some folks say they hire people from a diversity of backgrounds just to have a fragnmented IPA. In any event our backgrounds are a lot more varied than FDX.

I think extra experience such as an A&P gives you an opportunity to mark off an extra box on your application and that always looks good…

Very true

Being an A&P is like being a Marine, you are never a former marine or a former a&p <G>
I have mine and my friends all laugh when they see me coming at anything with a screw driver. I may be all thumbs, but the knowledge has helped me to understand things through my career and perhaps make systems classes just a tad easier.

What kind of statement is that and how do you propose to support it?
