Default Iphone and the company wireless?

I know this has nothing to do with the LOA but has anyone hooked up their iphone to the company wireless network? If so how did you do it? I have the appropriate pw and currently hook up my windows laptop.

Haven't tried the AOC network but it works fine with VIPS. You don't need a wireless network to get on the net since you can use the phone's mobile signal for internet access, but when you have wireless network reception it beats the pants off AT&T's "Edge". Hope that partially answers your question. . .

I actually heard that there was a section of the LOA that said the MEC and the NC will have the right to smash your new Iphone. Another reason to VOTE NO!!

Default Back to Iphone question

So, has anybody figured out how to connect with an Iphone yet using the wireless connection in AOC?

Sometime around the beginning of the year I had spoken to Ed Hope, the IT guy in charge of our wireless networking, and he said that they were not supporting smartphone/PDA access to the wireless network due to security reasons/settings with the browser that is used in these devices. He also did not indicate that they would support their use in the near future for the general population, even though some managers have access with company issued smartphone/PDA's. I guess the company issued devices have proprietary software installed allowing them the control that they need. If anyone finds any new updated info for access, I'd be interested as well.

Has anyone used these overseas? If so do you get charged anything extra (roaming) or just the hotel's wireless rate? I am interested in getting one if I can access company stuff...instead of lugging around a laptop overseas.

This is a real possibility, unless you leave the i-phone in "airplane mode".
See the "Cell-phone & Black Berry" thread in the "Majors" forum.

You can set the phone up to pick up wireless internet.

I'm not a techno geek or gadget guy, but my iPhone isn't the just the best cell phone I've owned, its one of the best products I've ever purchased. Apple has done a bang up job not only with the bundled goodies, but with the ease everthing just "makes sense" and works like a champ. I haven't broken out the directions yet, but haven't needed them as everything is pretty much intuitive.

Favorite feature of mine is the email. I had a Cingular Pocket PC system, and never could get email with AOL to work. Web surfing was labored at best, and slllllllloooooooowwwwwww. This thing goes "ching" and I look down and my AOL email is right there waiting--looking exactly like it does on my home PC. Multiple accounts? No problem. You can set up as many inboxes as you have accounts--in about 60 seconds. I've done plenty of VIPs work so far on the internet, and while wireless internet connections are slightly faster in most places the Edge network ain't painfully slow.

Planning on getting one for wife and mom for Christmas.... No kidding--killer app.

iPhone international options:

Voice:
1) Free international roaming with minute rates about 25% higher than the...

2) $6/month International World Traveller plan offers reduced rate calling from abroad.

Data:
International Data Global Plan for iPhone $25/month offers EDGE roaming in 29 countries (North America/China/Europe) with 20MB/month and half a penny/KB for overage. Big downside: 1 year commitment required and $175 early termination fee!

Be carefull about iPhone data usage internationally because the visual voicemail uses EDGE to get the messages onto your phone.
Audio files are faily large so you'll burn through your itl data allotment quickly.

You are unable to disble EDGE with the current iPhone firmware, i'd expect a change soon...

Skype is available for the iPhone and WIFI access works worldwide. Pull yur sim out overseas if you don't want to be hit with roaming data access charges.

Many of these crazy ATT plans should improve as the iPhone is rolled out worldwide and phone companies make reciprocal data agreements.

Cheers
George

Actually the iPhone is a full-fledged computer and technically not a pda/smartphone so the company's decision not to support pda/smartphone access is irrelevant to the iPhone connectivity question.
