The national anthem of Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan greatest country in the world, All other countries are run by little girls. Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium, all other countries have inferior potassium. Kazakhstan home of Tinshein swimming pool, it’s length thirty meter and width six meter. Filtration system a marvel to behold. It remove 83 percent of human solid waste. Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place, From Plains of Tarashek to northern fence of Jewtown. Kazakhstan friend of all except Uzbekistan, They very nosey people with bone in their brain. Kazakhstan industry best in the world, we invented toffee and trouser belt. Kazakhstan's prostitutes cleanest in the region, except of course Turkmenistan's. Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place, From Plains of Tarashek to northern fence of Jewtown. Come grasp the might penis of our leader from junction with the testes to tip of its face!
Very Nice!

HoursHore, That is just the kind of sensitivity about other cultures we need to move forward in a meaningful way. It is also very funny and just the kind of thing to showcase National pride with our trading partners.

Ahh yes, Almaty. In an attempt to get back to the original posting.....
Flying into Almaty/UAAA-The most important thing is situational awareness. The controllers' English isn't the greatest, the altitude clearances are in meters and be aware of the use of QFE for local altimetry versus what most of us are used to-QNH. Southwest of the airport is the city which is at the base of rising terrain-this topography often lends itself to fog at the airport.
RWY 5 seems to be in use most of the time. Looking at the 10-9 airport diagram, you will see that landing in this direction often causes a 180 degree turnaround on the runway after landing, to return to the parking positions. I'm not sure what size aircraft is involved with the job offer, but in the Classic we would go all the way to the end to turnaround because the midfield turnaround was not wide enough. Taxiing the 747 was a trick on the parking ramp because there were many Soviet-era aircraft parked all over the ramp, the possibility of dinging a wingtip was as probable as damaging some of the parked aircraft with jetblast. So again, the key is request QNH when transitioning below the Transition level, familiarize yourself with the metric altitudes on the approach plates and keep an eye out for where the high terrain is. Finally, the customs folks let you know who the boss is. Don't be cute, just do what those guys and gals with the big Russian hats say and you'll be fine.
This leads me to the city of Almaty. In the Summer, the scenery is very picturesqe. The mountains, the women, and the poverty are all sites to behold. Walking during the day, our crews would migrate to "the mall" for sightseeing. It wasn't a traditional mall, it was more of a shopping mecca. The vodka was cheaper than water and the women (in the Summer time) love to wear as little as possible. At night time, take a cab...walking is a little bit tricky...did I mention poverty makes the locals do what they have to do for money. Some of the hotels have casino-type gambling and there is a bar called the Starz Bar near the hotel my former airline stayed at that was a Western styled disco.
Good Luck with the decision, Almaty isn't high on my vacation list but the judges will give you high marks for the difficulty factor of this adventure.
