Why Brown managers won't unionize

Why Brown managers won't unionize
Because of the 80% participation requirement. There is no way that 80% of our line pilots will participate in the online poll over the next 3 weeks. Thus the FQ Supervisors won't even be given a chance to vote.
I hope I'm wrong, but am willing to wager a round at Humpy's.
PS: Can't they organize on their own if this straw vote fails?

Dude, WTF, over? Look back and read what you are saying. Uh, hello? an online poll means nothing about a vote of the IPA membership. You have not been in this business very long have you? Or if you have, you are totally out of touch with how a union, and company for that matter, works. You are obviously not experienced as a member of a union, or even someone fighting a union. Not meaning to be condescending, but your questions or "points" as they may be, are ridiculous to anyone whom has actually been in the business. are you for real?
The straw vote has nothing to do with anything actually. Just the IPA leadership getting a feel for where the membership stands, or sits as the case may be, thats all. Mi capisce?

OK, that came out badly in an emotional state. Sorry if I offended you, and sorry about the whole post. Seriously though, if you are a senoirity UPS pilot, you should call the IPA and ask them about this and find out what its really about. Sorry if I was an *********, well, I guess I was, but please call the IPA office and find out for yourself about this straw poll.

good idea, viktorbravo. I'll call the union.
Still recovering from verbal ninja moves thrown my way on your first reply
OK, so 75% participate. Then what? The straw vote has then failed. How can BM go forth with the process when the membership essentially said "no"? Again, that was the standard BM has set- 80%. Educate me, VB.

I only think that however this pans out, that in the long run it would be better for us to have these guys on the list. Notice I said, "long run". In the beginning I think it will be ugly and will do nothing but p!ss off many of our junior members. And they should be p!ssed off. But, they should also have a little perspective too. By integrating the "off the street captians" so to speak, we will be securing our future IMO. Yes, the junior folks will take some sh!t in the as$. However, in the long run it will be good for all of us.
We saw how in '97 they were able to move some aircaft, not with much, if any revenue mind you, but they did fly. At that time, the IPA said they would be added to SCAB list on fracpilot.com. Only thing is, quite a few of them were already on that list. But what did that mean? Nada, zilch, nothing........... They were still management with no recourse and had to live with what they did. Did it affect their carrers? No. It meant nothing. So, do we take them into he fold? I dont know. Should we? I dont know. But my gut feeling is that we should.

Do we need 80% participation or just an 80% yes vote?
Vik, I would say that this straw vote means everything. If they stand by their word, it has to pass or else we pass on taking on the company. Pretty big stuff.

interesting reading.
first- many are not off the street captains hired into a non-union mgt. postion. they were senority IPA crewmembers who chose to freely give up their senority number permantly-
date of hire? that is an interesting idea.
all i can say is reference the contract, you know that ol' thing we finally agreed to after 4 years. black and white- what does the contract say?

I'm pretty sure it was at least 80% participation in the poll by the membership...then at least 80% of those need to favor pursuing this issue. Not sure how I feel about it yet...A non-binding straw poll is fine for now, but before anything permanent is decided I'd like the integration details spelled out first. There's a whole host of issues that will need to be addressed besides where the managers will end up on the seniority list. Someone mentioned scabs in the mix as well...does anyone besides me care about that any more? If not, does being a union member mean anything these days? Most of the Captains I fly with are in favor of bringing these people in, but I haven't heard a convincing argument yet. I'm truly concerned about what's best for our union, not whether it's good or bad for me at this point.
