HKG Talior Made Pilot Shirts?

I have 2 HKG layovers this month and I have heard guys are getting shirts made by a tailor there...could use some info. I'm down to one servicable shirt. Thx.

Huck 09-29-2007 06:52 AM

I've used Linda Chow... she's on the list for your annual uniform allowance. I have, however, heard that her quality is declining. No problem with my shirts, though, and I got them last year.

Jetjok 09-29-2007 07:48 AM

I can't attest to the recent quality of Linda Chow's shirts, but I can tell you that: her shop is about 2 blocks from the hotel; the turnaround time is fairly short; she will ship back to the states, via FedEx; her prices are reasonable; and she always offers you a soft drink when you go there. What's more, she will keep your measurements, and so if you don't get any HKG trips, but still want to order a shirt or slacks, you can email or call her and she'll make them for you, and you can charge it on the company credit card. But be sure to specify what material you want your stuff made out of, because she has 100% cotton, and if she makes your shirts out of that, you'll be spending lots of time ironing them. What's more, they wrinkle very, very quickly. I'd recommend some blended material for shirts.

Here's her info. I got it from the FedEx web site under Uniform Policy and Information.

Unfortunately some crewmembers will have plenty of time to buy shirts while on STV.

Good point! But how does that change my post? Except that those guys won't have to have their new clothes shipped back.

I don't think so ... the union and the company both say the senior guys will bid and there won't be a need for STV!:eek:

Can I still change my vote?

Sniz,

Go to Winston Tailor (the guy's name is Raymond Lo.) From the Sheraton, go out the same door that the car drops you off at. Go left (the way that the cars go to exit.) Cross the street and go into the "Far East Mansions" entrance (it will be at your 2 O'clock position before crossing the street.) Walk about 40 feet (do not stop at the plethora of tailors there to distract you) and go up one flight of the stairs at your right. When you come out of the stairs, go right , and then take your first left. You will see his sign down that hall on your left (WINSTON Tailor.)

He is FedEx approved (can use your Corporate card and expense it under "uniform allowance.") He is pretty familiar with FedEx pilots. His shirts are nice, and he is also approved to make any other part of the uniform (pants, blazer, etc.) There should be some of his cards on the desk in the Sheraton Lobby next to the FedEx computer.

He is a nice guy, does great work, and stands by his product.

md11phlyer 09-29-2007 10:28 AM

Another recommendation for Raymond Lo and Winston Co. I believe his prices are slightly better but the quality is noticeabley better.

Just a note on Linda's quality lately. I had two shirts out of four with buttons missing. She seems to be letting things slid over the last couple years.

MrSuupafly 09-30-2007 04:48 AM

I got shirts from Linda Chow last year and the quality was poor. But I got a free beer out of it.

Normy! 09-30-2007 05:30 AM

-I don't know about the shirts, but I have to say that though I'm impressed that Fedex allowed me to buy a leather jacket and expense it...the quality of that thing leaves quite a bit to be desired. In a "previous life", I had a leather jacket custom made by Oxford leather in Osan, S.Korea. I've entertained the thought of having them take apart my Fedex jacket and create an exact duplicate. Only a duplicate made of GOOD leather, and with zippers designed to survive for a few years instead of a few minutes. Has anyone ever had a jacket like this made? What does the company think about doing something like this?

Jetjok 09-30-2007 06:05 AM

Normy,

You're right. A few years ago, for one of my birthdays, my wife bought me a leather jacket. It was made out of the softest leather you'd ever felt, with every stitch perfectly stitched, the zipper was smooth as glass. In short, it was a magnificent coat. It also cost over $900. However, our leather jacket is actually a work jacket, to be worn on trips where we may get it dirty or torn (s/o's and f/o's doing walkarounds, etc.) However, I'm sure the company would not at all mind your getting an "exact duplicate" made, at your expense, only this time, a duplicate made of good leather. Other guys have had clothing items made and I don't think anyone has been called on that. As for the zipper on your current jacket, can't you send it back to the manufacturer to be repaired? I wonder what the guarantee is anyway?

hyperone 09-30-2007 08:19 AM

JJ, I've taken my jacket back to the uniform shop twice now: once for the lining ripping out, and once for the snaps breaking off. Both times the repairs were covered by the warranty and were free. They even shipped it back to me for free.

Huck 09-30-2007 09:11 AM

You do that in Mumbai. Somebody else will have to post the scoop; I haven't done it yet.

I've used the Century Tailors and they are good....not cheap but good..
IF you go out the garage tunnel on the first floor towards Fridays...they are directly across the street in the little ally on the right side ....

Got a lambskin version from Anil at Rodeo Drive Leather in the Oberoi Hotel (Mumbai) 1/2 the weight of the issue jacket and (tailor made) the cost was approx $120. I was with Swoose and they had to kill a couple extra lambs for us!....:D Told a 727 Capt friend and he odered one from Anil online....delivery cost was $10.

USMCFDX 09-30-2007 05:15 PM

Pants from Linda = Good.
Shirts from Linda = Bad.

Huck 09-30-2007 05:59 PM

I gotta admit, I was about 12 days into a 15 day trip at the time, and I didn't mind Linda measuring my inside leg. Does that make me preverted?

Albief15 09-30-2007 06:02 PM

Ever see that episode of "Friends"?

Linda Chow is nice but the quality sucks. Use Winston Taylors across from the Sheraton. Much better stuff. Used both for years and there is no comparison. Fedex pays for Winstons too.

NoHaz 09-30-2007 10:16 PM

Landerwood --- got some new landerwood shirts and seems like a lower quality fabric compared to shirts from few years ago. Anyone else notice landerwood quality go down?

Check 6 10-01-2007 05:06 AM

I have had the landerwood shirts for a few years and yes the quality is heading south....buttons that come off, seams that are not sewn properly etc etc.... May not buy them this year...

SNIZ 10-01-2007 05:51 AM

Awesome

Great info guys! I appreciate it.

USNFDX 10-01-2007 06:01 AM

I really like these at pilotshirts.com.

Landerwood

I bought Landerwood and didn't like them. Collars were much smaller than every other brand I've tried and they shrank in the wash quite a bit. Fabric is too tough.....some guys swear by them though.

USMCFDX 10-01-2007 08:59 AM

Landerwood has been my shirt of choice. Just about ready to order a new set so I will have to see if indeed the quality has changed.

I buy my shirts at Landerwood also. Service is good. I usually get them the next day via FedEx ground.
Plus Landerwood Shirts are manufactured in the USA!

I Agree 100%

I Like Landerwood Shirts - 8 Years now - always good shirts.

Ordered three about 6 months ago...two had buttons come off (top button)and one had the seams in the pockets rip out....

I use Winston tailor and Mr. Raymond. Have been having him make me silk uniform shirts. They cost more but are very comfortable in the oppressive heat. He has also made dinner jackets and a cashmere long coat for me and I get comments all the time on how they look.

Now...If you could just find a nice fedora, you'd be set.

Nortonious 07-29-2008 05:59 PM

Landerwood - I don't get the hype

Ordered the Landerwood Style 700 (athletic).
- Way too baggy
- Fabric feels cheap
- Made in China (guess they used to be made in USA)
- Not very wrinkle resistant
- Over-priced ($32.95ea + s&h)

Probably gonna go back to PilotHouse style TOFS or try having some VanHeusen's tailored.

dudewannabe 07-29-2008 06:18 PM

How much are you guys paying Linda Chow per shirt?

Just curious.

HazCan 07-29-2008 08:44 PM

I use the tapered PilotHouse shirts and they are good. I can't believe Landerwood is now made in China!!?? I thought that dude used to be really pro-USA (ya know, like Walmart!)

Linda Chow's shirts are no good, pants are great.

My last batch of Landerwood shirts still say made in the USA, however, the quality is different from my previous set. Not sure what happened, but I really do not like them anymore.

Linda Chow's shirts are bad. Winston's is the best by far. Great pants and shirts. I have been using him for eight years. Tried Linda Chow and went back, got tired of buttons falling off and poorer quality material.

CaptDan 07-30-2008 05:13 PM

Winston

All of my shirts from Linda Chow have had buttons fall off or completely fell apart. Her shirts and pants are more expensive and lower quality.
Everything that I've gotten from Raymond Lo at Winston Tailors is great. I keep going back to him. He's made me a suit and a tux all great work.
Try it you'll like it!

Jolly Green 08-02-2008 11:35 AM

You might consider Jantzen Tailor Official Website A "Made to Measure" (semi-custom) tailor.

I have used them for 3 separate orders and have been happy with the results. But their mail-order service is a very low priority with shirts often showing up 4-5 months after order. That said, Ricky does not charge your credit card until shirts have shipped.

I understand that you will get much faster and better results if you stop by their retail store in HK. All in all, they provide a good quality shirt for the price with a wide variety of fabrics and styles to choose from.

Cheers,
D
