UPS to suspend hiring THROUGH 2008

According to a source in UPS HR, UPS is going to suspend hiring through all of 2008. They will run the few classes remaining this year and that will be it for newhires. They will staff the ANC domicile via displacement of junior crewmembers on other fleets as those fleets are realigned or retired.

Who is your source??? That is a rumor I would not start unless you're sure.

:D:D:D

let's see...I was off for 6 days and got 8 JA calls from scheduling desperate for me to do anything for them.

No need for hirings all of 2008? I find that laughable!

Nice try dude.

well the good news with all the displacements is.. the training center is now business cazh.

It's UPS, I believe it!! They will wait until the month the 27 767's start coming to start hiring again. Man, what a airline.

What you are hearing is absolutely correct. There will be no hiring until late 2008. I know the individual you are speaking of in HR personally and believe me, he knows.

Actually, it is logical based on the statement
"On Oct. 8, the first of three realignment/displacement bids will be opened to begin the process of moving crewmembers off the B-747 classic fleet and to expand the B-747-400 and MD-11 fleets. The bid reflects the upcoming network changes associated with these draw downs/expansions. Subsequent bids will be open in January and May 2008. ... crewmembers [are being] added and removed from individual fleets. " edited
"As a result of this bid, there will be no additional new hires required. 16 current DC-8 second officers will eligible for upgrade to remaining positions systemwide."

So, objectively, it would be arguable that in light of the ever expanding MD-11 training requirement and the drawdown of the classic Whale, they want to effectively reconstitute classic Whale drivers into MadDog 11 drivers. Based on the MD-11 training capabilities, it is logical the company cannot put any more crews into the training pipe. DOES NOT MEAN they are properly staffed, etc. Just a real limitation on a drawdown and expansion of different fleets.
They will still be short on some fleets and heavy on others and inevitably will always be a little out of sync. It is not all conspiracy, it never is perfect since they are constantly adjusting for the market (switching aircraft) on a timeline that is much shorter than the timeline it takes to train a crewmember for a new seat. Any smart business would resort to switching crews only as a last resort once proven cannot readily make consistent service with present staffing. My assessment, is they need to hire new crews, but the immediate requirement is get the 74's out and ramp up the new 74's and MD's.
For UPS poolies and applicants, I'd not be surprised to see spot outta the blue new hire classes by mid 2008. Opportunities emerge once they get this big fleet change rolling, they will start hiring when they can plug them in. Big unknowns remain: (1)Age 65 and (2) how many of our esteemed age 60+ folks hang around (3) DC-8 phase out( which is anyones guess)

Not that they can't change their mind, but a buddy in the 9/17 newhire class said HR told them UPS will hire around 200 in '08...mostly for ANC.

Any idea of how many displacees we're in need of to staff ANC fully? (late 2008 numbers)
Wonder what hire date keeps you out of ANC by choice..any takers?

I've heard upwards or 600+ crewmembers in ANC. Pretty much any newhire, except for the first batch of hires when we started hiring again in late 2004, is at risk for being displaced to ANC.
