Personally, I find it very difficult to study off a screen and a pdf document. I am old fashioned and highlight and tab my copy for quick reference in the cockpit. Even if I could study via a pdf document, It would take forever to flip through the pages of the one on the aircraft to find the info that I need since while the format is the same, the ergonomics are different. I would think standards would encourage the use of home study and the company would see the inherent safety and standardization value overweighed the cost of printing it for employees who were motivated to study and employ it in the course of their jobs.

I selected paper copy and don't have one either. :(

Paper copy doesn't apply to the FOM, just the CFM. Since we don't have to carry the FOM, they aren't sending them out.

Also, if you choose paper CFM, you won't get the CD OR the miniature CFM that you can carry.

I've seen this change from hard copy to electronic pubs in other flying units and the general knowlegde, and ease of quick reference/application in the cockpit, does go down if they don't hand out hard copies.

As previously communicated, in a few weeks we will implement changes in the way we distribute and update the FOM. The timeline for the FOM distribution is as follows:

October 13th - FOM Revision 40 will begin to appear in LIDO kits. Both the
old and new version will be in the kit until the change cycle is complete.
As always please do not remove these aircraft copies.

October 18th - Revision 40 will be posted to pilot.fedex.com (p.f.c)
under “manuals link” and on those aircraft with EFBs installed. (Revision
39 will also still be available)

October 18th - New FOM viewer with Revision 40 available on p.f.c

October 24th 0900Z - FOM revision 40 Effective. (Note: those who
ordered paper via VIPS election will receive it on the next mailing cycle
in late October)

Traditionally we have published a “cats and dogs” summarizing the changes. As you look in the new viewer under “Revision Highlights”, notice the majority of changes are clearly explained and highlighted. Those that
require additional explanation are covered below. The new viewer also has a search function.

This concept of manual distribution is becoming common across the
industry. Please give us your feedback as the system continues to evolve.

Highlights:

-FedEx is undergoing a comprehensive audit called IOSA from October 22-26, 2007, which is a requirement to continue as a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It is also beginning to become the standard that other countries require for carriers to operate in their territories in the future. You will notice changes such as “English is the language to be spoken for Cockpit communication”. These types of additions are a result of this forthcoming IOSA audit, which is also driving the majority of the changes for this revision.

-The FAA has introduced a new concept in dealing with Ice Pellets
called “Allowance Time”. Please review it (Chapter 8) before it gets too
cold! More on this later but we wanted crews to become aware now of the new ruling.

-There is a new table in Appendix B called “China RVSM”. We will provide
more information later but wanted the chart available to crews now, even
though the Chinese have not issued final rules on how we apply this chart.
We expect that ruling by late October 2007.

I don't think the company is going to be producing any "Small" FOM's. If I remember correctly, they are only going to produce future versions of the paper FOM in a larger, three-ring binder, format. If you still want a small one I think you're going to have to go to Kinkos to make that happen on YOUR dime. You can't expense this and you can't deduct it...so you get to eat it. I'm sure you'll hit some distribution issues as well with the new warning on the front cover. Good luck with that!!!

Actually, last week my LIDO bag had a copy of the "new" 3 ring binder version of the FOM. It's still about the same size as the bound version we've been receiving, it's just in a 3 ring binder. I assume someone will have to do page changes manually like we did in the "old" days.

Like someone elso said, there's always AOC Kinkos if you can find a printer that isn't busy printing bid packs. BTW ... the new color printers print 2-sided pages. At the worst case, you can always print it out single sided and then take it to the copy machine and make it 2 sided.

Actually, many of the other printers (I tend to use the same printers, so I don't really know what percentage) also print on both sides, if so selected in the printer options.
Perhaps I should make an effort to try other printers to see if they all (or none) do.

And yes, I get that this was said partly tongue in cheek.
