Default EWR to ANC Commute Help

Purple Tails,

Could anyone familiar w/ EWR commuting give me some pointers on parking availability- free or pay - and how available jumpseats are to ANC and back from EWR?

UPS Flies only EWR-ANC

Thank you in advance!

I commuted NYC to ANC for a year. I had an EWR employee parking pass via FedEx and used the FedEx shuttles to get to/from FedEx. I also used a bus from the Port Auth Bus Terminal in NYC to EWR termnal A then the FedEx shuttle from there. I've also parked at the EWR pax terminal parking and taken the shuttle from terminal A.

I was usually the only jumpseater, rarely more than 2. This was 9-10 yrs ago!

I did that commute for about a year and had no trouble at all. Although I'm not sure where Brown parks at EWR, FedEx guys can park in the employee parking lot. The lot is served by both regular crew buses, which can take you over to the passenger terminal, and FedEx buses which take you to building 347, which is where you'd go through security screening and then be escorted upstairs to FedEx flight ops.

As for the cost of parking, when I changed domiciles to ANC, I called the lady at FedEx EWR operations and asked her for an electronic parking pass. She made a big thing of it, and told me that the cost would be about $60/month. I said fine, and the next time I got to EWR, the parking passkey was ready. I used the passkey for the year I did the commute, and never once received a bill or a payroll deduction for parking. We even got a note that said the price was going up, but again, they never charged us.

Jumpseats were always available, and the MD-11's left almost every night at about 2 A.M., arriving Anchorage at about 7 A.M. Sometimes they had the captain-in-the-box configuration, and on these, you'd have to get the Captain's permission to ride. I was never turned down, and the beauty of it was if I was the only jumper, I got to use the bed. Flights left ANC at about 2 P.M., arriving back in EWR at about 1:30 A.M. Again, flights were usually available for jumpseating.

Hope this helps. The times might be a little off, but in general, that's how FedEx operates.

Good Luck.

JJ

I don't know if UPS or FedEx fly ANC-EWR. We just started PHL-ANC, not sure which days though.

UPS PHL to ANC is a Sat 1240Z departure direct for at least these 2 weeks. I hope it keeps going as that flt is great for me, PHL has free UPS parking at the gateway on Hog Island, but it's only semi-secure.

For the FDX EWR replies from JJ and FR8Dog- thank you very much! I'll get ahold of the UPS gateway at EWR to learn my parking fate/$.

The info is good. My experience has been though that any J/S to ANC can be tough though. The bases up there have grown and the J/S's are full most of the time-- not just from EWR but anywhere. Lots of commuters.

Good luck.

FDX usually has at least one direct flight going each direction daily. I looked at the rest of this week and it's pretty wide open.

Seems like most of the legs I've flown recently going down there or back have had at least one seat open, usually more, unlike the MEM legs.

Book 'em early!

I have been commuting FL-ANC and back on FDX for 7yrs. Once or twice it was a hassle. EWR-ANC daily (3:45am). MEM-ANC 3xDaily Tues-Thurs, 2xDaily other days. ORD-ANC 5 days/wk (2:00am). In addition UPS has direct Louisville-ANC many days/week. Hope this is helpful.
