Anyone knows if the 71,75 and 76 years old FEs are still working or are they on medical leave? Man, if I'm still working at 76 I'd like my fellow pilots to shoot me - PLEASE!

Razor 11-25-2007 07:50 PM

AV8OR,

If you're going to stick with the Georgia font do you think we could at least get you to go to 12 point instead of 10? It's a bit hard on the eyes. :D

I didn't realize you were serious. Is Georgia font really hard to read? I switched from Verdana (default choice) to Georgia because I found Verdana more difficult to read. I thought Times New Roman and Arial were not much better so I stuck with Georgia.

Could it be your computer only? Anyone else here thinks Georgia font is hard to read?

I'll be glad to stick to the default font, I'm just grateful the recruiters at every airline I've ever worked at didn't mind... ;) I've used this font exclusively on every resume I've had for the last 7 years or so...It worked each time... :)

PS. Wait a second – are you one of those 60+ FEs? Maybe even the 76 year old Brown veteran? Because that would explain things a little… I mean that Commodore 64 computer you must be using probably doesn’t even have a font named Georgia, does it? Heck, was Georgia even a State when the darn thing was invented? (Just kiddin’ folks). Enjoy Verdana!

I don't think so. It was someone else that mentioned it the first time. :)

No, I'm not one of the over 60 FE's. Heck, I just interviewed a couple of weeks ago. Still hoping for a pool letter. Maybe I should keep my mouth closed about the font! Disregard all above. I love the Georgia font. If I knew how to do it, I'd change mine to Georgia too. :D

Did I mention how BT, who was reviewing my resume, complemented me on having a great looking resume? He said having a clearly readable resume made his job that much easier!

Kiddin' of course. Wish you the best! Would love to see you and all the poolies in a brown uniform soon!

That font is most annoying.

Thanks for switching to the default.

Of course you are kidding. BT is a fellow Tennessee Volunteer and no self-respecting Vol is going to use a font named Georgia!

Go Vols!

Well, I couldn't find a ‘Tennessee font’ (at least one that’s worthy Tennessee ;)) however I think I found one Ms. Clinton would appreciate.

I see, just curious. I was commuting on CAL once and the FO had some pictures of his military flying. He was U2's and T-38's as well and had some pics just like your avatar.

Curious if you were the same dude.

Why is everybody pressuring this guy? If it were me, and I'd just started somewhere, I'd tell you all after it's played out and not a second earlier. There can't be too many U-2 drivers out there, so I'm sure this guy would like to keep it under wraps.

That being said, "Are you going to choose UPS?":p

Razor 11-29-2007 10:28 AM

Boy, this is a tough crowd. I was hoping when I posted about my UPS interview that it wouldn’t draw much attention. I debated posting at all but in the end decided to do so because I feel like it has been such a long journey and I wanted to update my “friends”.

A bunch of us did a lot of posting about the UPS application process at the beginning of the year, helping each other out with things like whether or not you have to reapply on 07 even though the 06 app is still there and able to update, what is the difference between Active and On File, how long to get the assessments email and don’t hit submit until the application is complete because you can’t update even though it takes the information. These are guys that I’m seeing are now being displaced to ANC if not there already.

This isn’t an anonymous forum and it’s pretty easy to figure out who someone is but I wouldn’t post anything here that I wouldn’t say to your face so it doesn’t matter. In the end I decided I like being part of this online community and I posted. It is a public forum and I’ve opened myself to your questions about my decision.

I’ve learned a lot about the airline industry since I started reading APC and I know how lucky I am. We talked about multiple offers during my interviews with Delta and UPS. Everybody should have such “problems” but as I’ve read here many times, I really don’t have a decision to make. I haven’t heard from UPS on the results of my interview and even if successful it is still a competitive pool and it doesn’t mean I’ll ever be offer a class date. Right now I have class date with Delta and I am very happy and excited about that. I’m focused on doing the absolute best I can there and if I have a decision to make I the future, well I guess I’ll cross that bridge when/if I get to it.

I didn’t intend to highjack this thread so I’ll shut up now and let you get back to the discussion of the IPA’s age distribution. :)

Great post Razor! Good luck to you and keep us posted ONCE you get an offer from UPS on what you decided to do. In the meantime good luck at Delta!

Back to the topic of this thread - sooo, once the age 60 rule gets revised, do y'all think every pilot over 60 will select to stay or do you think a certain portion will decide to retire at 60 anyways?

I'm guesstimating 80-90% will decide to keep flying but then a large number of them will end up on medical leave. I'm thinking the cost of mutual aid will go up a whole lot in the near future. What do you think?

Razor,
To heck with the UPS crowd <g>. Who cares, your the one who is going to live with your decision. You will be two years and settled at DAL when UPS finally gives you a call, then you can say whatever you desire. Had a bud living in SDF, in the pool, wanted UPS so bad!!! Hired at Fedex. 2 years later, UPS calls. Thanks but no thanks was his response. You will whine no matter where you hang your hat! Your a smart guy. Enjoy your new career!
To me it's not parochial, as aviators we go for the best deal that is in the window of opportunity when you are in the market.

⌐ AV8OR WANNABE 11-29-2007 07:24 PM

Also, by then the airline merger shakeup might be over with and it'll be easier for you to make a decision...

L'il J.Seinfeld 11-29-2007 09:19 PM

Let me begin by qualifying my post. I have only ever worked for one airline (UPS) after coming from the USAF. I did an immense amount of research when completing an MBA on the airlines. I came to my own conclusions regarding the airline industry independent from the paradigm that many folks (including those at UPS) have of the eliteness of flying jobs.

It was not very long ago that everyone on this board and FI.com were bemoaning the legacy carriers. Now that they are hiring everyone suddenly can see the upside of a career there. I coorelate the eliteness or desirability of working at a carrier directly with the certainty that said carrier will deposit my paycheck from now until I retire.

Being ANC based for UPS is still a no brainer decision over working for any passenger airline. There are plenty of other factors that I can understand that would influence Razor's decision. But assuming that he has a clean slate and has no strings attaching him to ATL I respectfully think that he'd be nuts to pass on UPS regardless of when the time comes.

UPS is extremely arrogant in their hiring practices. They think they are better than anything else out there and that applicants should feel priviliged to pay their own way to SDF to interview and then sit and wait in a ridiculous pool. The hiring practices of UPS are embarassing, but the fact is is that HR knows this is the plumb job out there and they are right.

Good luck Razor. I hope you get the option of choosing your job. I was in the same position nearly 3 years ago with SWA and UPS. Based on what I know of your stated background your working at UPS will seem like a vacation after what you are used to. Again, best of luck to you and post an update if/when you decide to start class at UPS.

Shaggy1970 11-29-2007 11:28 PM

Razor,
Don't worry too much about the forum here! Having just been where you are I know how tough all this really is. Good luck at Delta, I have two good buddies that just got hired there and they love it! God bless.

This is a good time to review this chart, anyone have a guess about the long term implications here?

UPSFO4LIFE 12-14-2007 09:32 AM

Long term: Loss of seniority in seat which equals more crappy schedules, upgrade, maybe in 15 or so years. Loss of 5 years of Captain pay, but wait, I can now make that up by working until 65, then I can die a few short years later. No hiring now for a while, hopefully no furloughs. Would not put it past UPS. If you are relativley junior like me, I see no positive results of raising the retirement age.

It has POSITIVELY raised the stress level and nerves in our household ...

Brown CC...DC-8 F/E might be an option, curious to see how it plays out vs ANC. ANC F/O will pay higher, but DC-8 S/O wil be much better QOL...either way be a tough few years...

That would work just fine for me ... "deadheading to your next preflight"

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind to add that rating to my tickets. I had to take the written just to get the interview. Now I know why ... ;)

Loss of pay riding in the backseat should outweigh the myrad of problems created by commutting to ANC ... IMHO.

P.S. .... approx $34/hour difference from FO to SO in 2nd year .... HmmmMMMHHMMM ...

Did you say commuting to ANC....man that will take years off your life!! My household is watching what happens on this next bid as well(oh wait...I am already going to ANC so what else can happen?)

I thought there had to be a vacancy for a back seater to come to the front...since most of the vacancies are ANC wont they get that??...that seems to me the only option, unless you want to stay in current possition.
