Mark,

You mean the LCA could hear you from the cabin seats in the back? If that's the case, I agree with you.

I wear the Bose X all the time in the Mad Dog. I have to turn the radio volume WAY down, b/c normal settings blow my ears out. And I don't completely uncover one ear: I wear it slightly too high on one side, so I get sufficient noise reduction, but I can still hear my partner. As I get into the approach environment and the ambient noise level reduces, I expose more of my ear. It works fine for me and I like it, but it's not for everybody, I'm sure.

Sorry, but I'm sticking with my safety position on this one. His earplugs interfered with cockpit communications and that is simply not a very good thing.
If I had a captain tell me I did not have the right to protect my hearing at my discretion, I would call for the crew van and have myself removed from the trip!!!! Next I would worry he was going to tell me I needed to wear briefs instead of boxers!

Sounds to me like a weak f/o looking for another excuse? After I call Flight Standards to report your unprofessional behavior, I'll be glad to call the crew van for you. Good luck with that one at the disciplinary hearing.

I love it.

Big, orange, ear plug shaped pasties.

Sounds to me like an old geezer who can't figure out he needs to speak up. I would also call Flight Standards and the Ethics committee and let them know what a pompous a$$ you are and what a unsafe environment you create in the cockpit. Would also fill out a ASAP report at the first available chance. Good luck with that one at the disciplinary hearing. A phone call to the FAA hotline 1-800-FLY-SAFE goes along way a pushy belligerent overbearing captain if the company will not take action. All you have to do is mention "unstable".

Don't forget OSHA. They'd be really interested if an employer ruled out your ear plugs via disciplinary hearing (no pun intended).
