Side fyling at Fedex
Is it difficult to get approval to do extra commercial flying outside of Fedex, such as flight instruction on the side. Has anyone ever gotten approval from the VP, per the contract, to do such flying?

I once flew with an f/o whose family operated a charter flying service in Anchorage, AK. Each year, he would get approval to fly for the family business for a month during their busy season.

something non-flying
You'd be wise to discover something non-flying to do that might make you extra money/be a fall back.

Thanks, going to send the email to my ACP tommorow. Wasn't sure if it was something warmly received or not.

Did some part 91 on the side in a Citation several years back. I was told by my ACP to put in the letter that there would be no conflicts with my legality for Fedex flying and that I knew that my primary focus would remain on my job at Fedex. As long as I put the company first, he said there would not be any problem. Had the letter in hand within a week. I did have to write and receive a letter each year.

2.24 Other Commercial Flying Non-company commercial flying by FedEx pilots is restricted by the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). FedEx pilots may not do any commercial flying other than FedEx Express, if that commercial flying would count toward his FAR regulated block hours or duty time limitations of FAR 121.503 through 121.525. This restriction does not apply to a pilot who is a member of a military guard or reserve organization in the flying of military aircraft. |
So where exactly does 'sim' flight instruction fall with this? I assume there is no fllight time problems as sim instruction isn't 'flight' time. But does sim instruction fall into the duty time equation effecting rest/24 in 7 issues?

Last FOM change says:
Section 12.A. Hours of Service - General -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flying (Non-Company) This Agreement contemplates that pilots shall devote their entire professional flying service to the Company, except that nothing in this Agreement shall be construed to prevent a pilot from affiliating with the military service of the United States. Pilots shall not fly aircraft other than those operated by the Company for hire or remuneration unless authorized by the Vice President, Flight Operations, or his designee. Except for Company flight operations, a pilot shall not perform flying which would count toward his FAR regulated block hours or duty time limitations. This does not restrict a pilot who is a member of a military guard or reserve organization in the flying of military aircraft. |
I spent 2 years at FDX with an extra job as a simulator instructor.
The sim flying didn't count toward FAR time so FDX never cared about how many days/hours I taught in the box. As far as duty time, if you are legal on the jumpseat you are legal for the trip. If you had some FAR duty time earlier that day in the sim then you are on your own if something goes wrong. How far you want to push that envelope is up to you. |
