UPS jumpseat tips
#1
I didn't realize how many little things I can do as a jumpseater to keep out of the crew's way and make me be a jumpseater who's a pleasure to have on board.
OK, first question, where should I stand or sit on the DC-8 after I check in with the crew? I feel like I'm in the way most of the time. Other fleets, feel free 2 chime in with your pet peeves and solutions for making jumpseaters better informed. Asta la vista..

I may grab a water or V8 without asking because there are usually a bunch of them in the cooler. I've never dug into the catering without asking though.

Also, I always ask if I can bring my bags up. Maybe I'm anal, but I even ask on the Airbus...you just never know. I had a j/s (old timer) come up and just stick his bag where I usually put mine and not ask or say anything. For a second, I thought he had brought my bag up for me...NOT! I thought it was kind of rude.
On the DC8, I usually just sit down in one of the cockpit jumpseats and keep to myself. That's the best way I found to stay out of the way on the 8.

One of the guys I flew with shortly after I got here made a point of carrying the crew's bags down to the van after the flight. It was appreciated and I try to make a point of doing the same.
On the MD, most guys appreciate the jumpseaters going into and coming out of the bunkroom, if it's available to them, when the operating crew is going out or in. That way, they are less likely to disturb those sleeping. Not a big deal to me, but for some.
Just ask first what the crew would like and things should get off on a good footing.

Amen, Puppy.
I'm getting annoyed with jumpseater behavior here. Bottom line is, ASK before you do anything other than take a whiz in the lav.
Want fire up your laptop or make a bed out of the seat cushions? Ask. Want to eat? Ask the FE or front seat occupants what is available for chow. Where to put your bags, in the belly or topside? Ask. Want that delicious Diet Coke that's sitting all by itself? Ask.
