The message that was posted on this board was actually an internal memo to UPS pilots. It was never meant for public consumption (though ineveitable with the internet). I'm not sure how he is supposed to address this significant, yet problematic event. I would agree he should have at least mentioned that our gain will come at a substantial loss to others. However, it is a fact that there will likely be oppurtunities for UPS pilots created because of this event. He had to communicate that part of it. It's his job as the President of our Union to do so.

It's his job to demonstrate some class. He's never done that. I've met him, so I know whereof I speak.

What do you expect him to put out to the membership? He read about the deal the same time the rest of us did; at least the leadership was proactive and found out some answers to some of the questions that would inevitably be asked.

It's nothis job to be sensitive or really even care abouit any other pilot groups except the IPA. For an internal memo to the pilots, I thought it appropriate. For a public prounouncement, I'm sure he will show the sensitivity and angst you so desire him to exhibit.

Get over it, it's business and neither you nor I can do anything about it.

Yeah, I did, back when we were going to start a Cargo Pilot Alliance group with you guys, FedEx, and ABX. I was part of the meetings. I'll bet if you switched places with one of us, your tune would change pretty fast.

I HAVE been in your shoes. In fact, 3 times in 5 years. I truly am sorry that DHL has pulled the rug out from under you. It sucks, it hurts, it stings. I really do understand that. I would hope that no one would consciously gloat at this annoucement. The way I read Miller's statements are just that, statements. He was not gloating. I'm sorry you don't like him, but he has a responsibility to keep his union informed.

I think we all have to remember as well, is that there isn't a contract with DHL yet. Things can always fall apart. If this goes through, I really hope and wish for the best for ASTAR and ABX alike. Hopefully your companies will find new work, and if we start hiring, hopefully we can get a pref interview process going.

This is an ugly biz. Us pilots can only control so much. The suits do the rest. We pilots are never consulted on these kinds of things, so they will continue to happen. As someone posted on our internal IPA board: "We are all 1 management decision away from losing our jobs."

What a sad day for my fellow teamsters operating for DHL. I remember all the support we received from those folks during the past.

If I were UPS I would be cautious about hiring a bunch of pilots and finding new airframes to fly this so called contract, based on the fact that they (DHL) will pull the rug out from under you and now you are staffed for a furlough etc.

Hey I know how UPS can save money they should get FED EX to fly their frieght and get rid of all of those airplanes. Bravo! If ABX and Astar cant fly the frieght then DHL should get out! A DC-9 is too expensive to operate my hindend.....so is a 757 if its empty. I would like Airborne express back and we can be a distant third in the shipping world (USA) and make money like we used to, and the only red and yellow I would see would be on the Iowa State football team. Come to think of it yellow and red has not been to good for them either.

Don't worry, they won't hire a bunch and I suspect the extra volume will fit into most of the system we have now, ala Emery. I've read mentions about not retiring and even recalling some DC-8's that were on their way to the desert. Now if they reactivate the 727's it could get pretty crazy...
UPS excells at doing more with less.... That is good news and bad news depending on where you are at on the list or in the pool.

Despite all the talk about how Miller could have issued a more PC statement in what is supposed to be an internal venue, Fed Ex has won the spinning top award by claiming it will be a boon to their business because of the disruptions of the integration. While given UPS' penchant for doing things on the cheap and hence ****ing some customers off I doubt Fred would have done any better. But you gotta love the quick and clever retort to the announcement, and the relative stock prices of FDX and UPS sure say a lot in my book as to Wall Street's effective yawn about the deal. And while Miller could have done better yesterday, what has been issued by DHL management to their crews?
