So are they parking all airplanes of ABX and ASTAR or just the DC9's form ABX?

Very true, a few weeks ago I posted here somewhere that based on several newspaper articles it looked as if DHL would be outsourcing some of their flying to Fedex... Not for a second did I think UPS was even being considered as DHL several weeks prior had released a statement saying they're looking into working with the USPS (Post Office) and Fedex - not UPS.

Very surprising and I think the long term agreement (10 years) is why UPS would even consider this as they're usually very conservative, like to be in control and don't like "out of the box" ideas.

I too hope that IF Dhl furloughs (not certain they will as they might be able to find some additional lift) we can offer the Dhl employees preferential interviews… Hopefully UPS and Fedex will be able to absorb them all…

I mentioned Fedex too because I just read that Fred thinks the agreement will generate more customers for Fedex, which very well might be true.

Hvydriver - I read the memo - how would you have explained the agreement to your union members? I didn't see any gloating in his statement, I truly didn't - he was just trying to explain that IF the agreement would go through the additional pilot jobs at UPS would go to the line guys and not management flying or some alter ego airline - I think that was his main message... Then again, maybe I'm just naive?

We have a new CEO, young and from the financial side, not he operations side of the house. Never even drove a package car! Maybe this is a sign of them finally starting to accept some modern management ideas?

I sure hope so. Even though the “old style” management has worked well enough for the company to celebrate our 100 year anniversary in August of last year it is always good to try some new ideas...

Since the crews are not technically employed by DHL, they haven't said anything.

When asked by a reporter how many jobs this might affect, I think the answer was around 1,000 to 1,500 DHL jobs.

Then he went on to say something to the effect that we use several suppliers in the US and we have no idea what effect this may have on them.

Yeah.. right.

Something must be about to happen.

Dude, the only reason these guys would let a non-boxhead near the top would be to use him as a sacrifice. Some bad stuff must be on the way! (tongue firmly in cheek)

If you understand UPS at all, you know that this will mean very few additional pilots here. They will make due with maybe keeping the 8 on a few more years and bringing a few out of the desert. Truck it truck it truck it, then if you have to, fly it. Some people have no idea the scope of the UPS ground network. The airline plays a very very small role in the entire system. If anything, this will probably create more teamster jobs on the ground side of things.

Yes, but according to the WSJ, even the smaller Astar side they used 44 aircraft to move DHL's freight. And ABX is much larger. Should be interesting, because they may have had to buy aircraft like yesterday. we'll see in about three months when the ink is dry on the contract.
