777 manning fdx

Ok, that would be 80 guys per plane so the total would be 1200 guys for 15 planes? I don't think so. At RGS in May, O said 20 guys per plane which would be 300 guys which makes more sense.

30 A/C at 20 Crews = 1200 pilots

The thing about manning requirements is, that in reality they are largely driven by block hours not a/c on hand. However, block hours are rather nebulous statistics that are often hard to find depending on the airline, so it gets boiled down to the more pilot friendly stat of crews per aircraft which ultimately is about as useful as the guarantee fairy that Ray Zalinsky puts in all of his auto parts boxes.

Let's say....
16 hours of flight time a day per airframe, times
30 days a month, times
30 airframes, times
4 required flight crewmembers aboard, equals:
57,600 flight hours a month. Divided by
75 hours per line, equals:
768 pilots.
That's 25.6 pilots per airframe.....

It's 20 crews per aircraft.
A crew is 2 pilots. If they choose to augment that crew for a long flight then they do. However, the baseline crew for any of our aircraft (modern ones, anyway) is 2 pilots. Anytime I've heard 777 manning discussed, at some point the manning is compared to the MD-11/10, which is manned at 11 crews per aircraft. There's no point in making this comparison if the "crew" definition for one aircraft isn't the same as the other.

Huck, I agree with your math but the premise is incomplete. You forgot vacation, 12 work days/mo (crews are not avail 30days.mo), required reserves 10-15%. This makes 1200 pilots seem conservative.

From RGS last week from commander zero: manning for Md-11 is 10-1 and the 777 will be 20-1. 250 pilots on the 777 by 2010. Oct bid for the 777. His words, subject to change. also form RGS: 727 gone by 2014, 87 757s authorized and 50 purchased so far. Plenty of 757s out there, but not always at the price FDX wants. Every DC-10 will go thru MD conversion....6 retirements since Jan, 138 over 60 guys right now, of the guys between 58-60 in age, 2/3 dont have 25 YOS at FDX, so he anticipates few retirements. FDA's: CDG will be back 12-18 mos, he guesses as an Airbus domicile. MD-11 domicile in HKG will happen sometime.
