Yeah I get all giddy too about any UPS shiney new iron being in based in the lower 48, it gets a bunch of real senior folks outta my way. I understand that it would be cool to fly any of the new ego jets, but after a couple trips its just another airplane. The shine wears off quick.

. But, I highly doubt that in 5 short years that the MD will be pure domestic. The 767 maybe, but not the MD.But then again UPS has done stranger things, thats for sure.........

If they do in fact bring some 8's out of retirement they are going to need people yesterday. The problem is that this displacement will run first, then vacancies later down the road. But either way, for probably the next few years, most all original and recurring vacancies for a front seat will be taken by the distinguished elderly gentlemen on the panel of the eight, so it really doesnt matter how they do it I guess.
I figure after this displacement, there will be roughly 80 DC-8 FE's that could bid back up front through most of 2009. That eats up alot of front seat vacancies. If you are displaced to FO or FE, I would plan on being there at least a few years. Thats just my guess. I'm planning on just moving to ANC for around 5 years and making the best of it.
The good news is that with a little additional flying they probably wont furlough anyone, but again, thats just a guess as well.
If theres one thing I have learned is that it's extremely difficult to gauge what UPS is going to do wrt vacancies, realignments, displacements and hiring. We have watched the musical chairs game for years around here, so its nothing new. Actually one crystal ball is just as good as any other.

After the displacement, there will be 40 FE's born in 1945 or later, and about 10 of those are on medicals.

When the over 60 ANC FO's bid the capt seat, that will free up some FO positions for the guys that get displaced to FE so thats good, every little bit of movement helps. The quicker the vacancies come the better, nothing new there.

We (Purple)buy the MD-11 and years later Brown does....we buy the the A-300 and years later, Brown does, we buy the A-380 and then Brown does, we cancel the A-380 , then Brown does, we buy the 777F and .....................(fill in the blank). To be fair, you've had the 757 for eons and we are just now getting it to replace the 727. Safe bet that you will get the 777F but then again, I had my money on Big Brown in the Belmont

Yup, just look at what FDX does, wait about ten years, then UPS decides to do it.
FWIW I heard from numerous mgmt types that the only reason UPS even cosidered the A380 was because FDX was buyng them. They felt they needed it to compete.
