UPS Intl. Jumpseat?

Can anyone tell me if an offline jumpseater is allowed on UPS flights? About two years ago I rode to Hawaii on UPS and remember the crew telling me we could ride International as well - I'm trying to get to KUL or SIN where I'll buy a ticket to get to Medan, Indonesia in September. I was told yesturday that offline carriers can't ride international on UPS  Has that changed or always been the case?

Almost certain that UPS does not allow International Jumpers... Maybe Northwest, Cont, or Delta can get you to Asia.

Good Luck

I can take EVA or China through TPE on a ZED pass - I just want to avoid NRT or HKG that adds about 10-15 hours to the trip. I need to Get to KUL or SIN as straightline as possible from LAX. I was hoping to ride a cargo carrier but I guess that's not gonna happen; oh well - thanks.

Unfortunately no international jumpseat on UPS (or Fedex from what I heard from my friends over there)... except the respective employees that is

fedupbusdriver 07-17-2008 11:09 AM

Polar and Atlas do, though I don't know if they service Sin or Kul.

GIANT PILOT 07-17-2008 08:10 PM

Ride on us!

Forget FedEx, UPS or NWA Cargo for Int'l jumpseat, Atlas and Polar can get you there, unfortunately we have no flights scheduled to either destination.

Buy a ticket on Tiger (low cost carrier out of SIN). Only "international" jumpseat on us is HNL,ANC, and SJU.

A few years ago (after 9/11 I think?) I emailed the NWA j/s coordinator and asked if I (a FedEx CASS bubba) could j/s on an NWA International. His reply was that I could j/s on ALL NWA flights but that for Intl flights there would need to be an empty seat in the back for me to sit in. Any NWA folk on this board that can verify the policy is still the same?

Try Kalitta from ANC to HKG or ICN, local after that. They do allow int'l jumpseaters.

That policy applies to ALL pax airlines (unless you work the particular airline or are a feeder for them). I'm not a NWA but a Brown CASS Bubba and have flown to Europe on CAL, DAL and NWA.

Think of it this way, international jumpseat per se is not allowed (for 121 ops) but they'll use the existing jumpseat agreements to let you ride in the back if there are seats available. Since those seats do not exist on Fedex, UPS, NWA Cargo, and other 121 cargo airlines - no international jumpseating is allowed on those airlines. (to clarify, it's not the seats but the FAA inspected and approved reinforced cockpit doors that are missing)

I might be wrong but I believe Fedex guys can jumpseat internationally on AA, I think our jumpseat committee is still working on that...

We've been trying for years and years, don't hold your breath. AA (coporate) feels that we are more valuable to them as customers than as guests. Their j/s guy is trying to help but he tells me that with relations the way that they are over there, we can pretty much forget it.

Because of the possible furloughs there?

767pilot 07-18-2008 02:18 PM

no, long stalled contract talks and a generally sour labor/mgmt relationship

I fly for the purple folks and I just was on the jumpseat with Delta to Venice and back. You can jumpseat on almost anyone. The problem lies with cockpit access verses cabin only. You can actually ride in the cockpit out of the country but not coming back in. I think that has to do with CASS and security screening procedures coming in from other countries. The Delta folks were very accommodating and made it very easy.

Better double check on that. What you are describing is a CASS advancement that has not happened yet.

flying4dollars 07-18-2008 06:09 PM

All I know is what I was told and what I was permitted to do. I flew passengers for ten years before flying here and when the restriction on international jumpseats was imposed I was still flying people. Even then we were permitted to take pilots out of the country in the jumpseat but not back in. In fact, initially we weren't allowed to jumpseat in any form back into the country. The compromise came when they let us "jumpseat" in the cabin. I just went through this entire process last week on Delta. I don't claim to know everything about the jumpseat policies, just what worked with me.

I'm not calling you a liar, I'm just saying that someone did you a HUGE favor if you rode in the cockpit.

flying4dollars 07-18-2008 06:40 PM

I've ridden in the jumpseat a couple of times on different carriers...last year on CAL into Mexico. I've always been told the same thing...out the U.S. it's ok in the cockpit if there are no other seats available but coming back into the U.S. cabin only. I didn't take any offense to the posting...just commenting on what I understand to be permitted. Personally, I think we should be good to go on any flight anytime. If only I were king....

Maybe there are different rules for different airlines? I've jumpseated numerous times to/from Europe since 9/11 and jumpseating in the cockpit was always limited to crew members of the particular airline only (or the airline's feeder).

Since 9/11 I’ve flown on CAL, DAL, and NWA . I 'jumped' on those airlines during my time here at UPS and also in the past when I flew for American Connection and later Airtran - cockpit jumpseating for me, whether in or out of the US, was never even an option.

Does your airline have a “super duper” jumpseat agreement or did you bring some extra sweet cookies? ;)

The Subic folks take our j/s up to NRT and NWA to/from states all the time.

Are you saying FDX guys fly in the cockpit on NWA and NWA guys/gals fly on FDX in, well the cockpit? Because that's what we've been discussing here - actual cockpit jumpseat...
