You can usually call crew scheduling the day of the trip and find out if they are actually going to use those seats or not, and get them released

That doesn't help me much when planning a commute since I don't live in SDF. There's got to be a better way...

There was a way, no online deadheading by the company, but the negotiating committee didn't see it that way. Actually, since these are reserves, it probably wouldn't have helped anyhow. The flip side would be for them to not book those seats until they needed them, allow you to book, and then bump you the day of the trip. Not a very nice alternative either unfortunately.

True but it at least would work for the CYA angle.
