Default PVG 580 Market prices??

Just curious if anyone else had experienced the prices at Shanghai's 580 market going up. I did my usual dance today after their "best price for best customer", ended up putting my money away and walking out....AND THEY DIDN'T FOLLOW ME??!!

This is a major blow to my huge, overinflated ego and I am not sure that I will be able to operate tonight.

BTW, I was at a couple of my regulars, the Tommy Bahama shirt shop and Fifi's purses-***?

Anyone else having this happen, or was I just off my game. I mean, my trip isn't complete if I can't bring home a bag full of crap for $20.

I was there in June and walked away without being chased. The whole place seemed strangely subdued to me. The shopkeepers actually waited for you to walk in front of their store before they asked if you wanted a watch, bag, coat, etc etc. (as opposed to running down the hall to grab you and drag you towards their shop as I'd seen in the past). I'm assuming (hoping) things will get more normal in September, at least with the bargaining.

Yeah, it's like there was a memo out or something. I hate being hassled, but the place didn't seem the same.

It honestly wasn't worth the effort to save one buck at those prices. The per diem alone covers about 8 per day.

Olympics aside- mention that you will take your shopping to CAN/ZGGG/Guangzhou and you'll get your old price at the Shang. It's where they get the stuff anyway. Works at 580.

Haz:

You're clearly not going with the right people. What you need is someone who can show you how to lay down the law and FORCE them to sell at your price.

Once, I had this grasshopper along who needed to be shown the way. He watched me drill some poor Chicom out of a dollar for a tie. Said grasshopper then went across the way and held firm on his price for a $5.00 pair of Chuck Taylors, after seeing some effective brokering techniques. He was nervous thinking they wouldn't deal, but they did and I was VERY proud...tears through smiles all the way back. I bought him an ice cream cone as a reward!
