You think this thread is long now, just wait and see the one if this thing really happens. It will be "why didn't the union tell us/warn us", "Its all the over 60 guys fault", "UPS hates labor", "IPS hates young guys", "I should have never taken this job" etc etc etc. I've learned a long time and 4 airlines ago, that pilots aren't any smarter then anyone in any other profession even though we wish it could be so. So be prepared and don't waste your time. Here's some of the problems with being furloghed from Brown, if god forbid it happens, just some thoughts. If you can get a job flying, they will most likely want you to resign your number, FAT CHANCE. UPS will be around, just a bump in the road. Almost all contract overseas flying jobs require a 4 to 5 year contract and if broken, well, big money. How long will a furlough last, you could be rolling the dice on this one. What corporation will want to spend big dollars buying you a type, or any organization, knowing that when recalled, you will no doubt go back to $120 an hour at UPS as fast as you can run. Why would they, when they can get some other guy. A guy that worked for a company that no longer exists. If it happens be prepared to do something other then aviation, because of the above reasons. Also, to add some more insight to the picture see the below article.
Intel chief gloomy on the economy By Yi-Wyn Yen SAN FRANCISCO - Intel CEO Paul Otellini, who runs the world’s largest semiconductor business, gave a sobering view of the economy to the Web 2.0 Summit crowd Thursday. If you think the recession is bad now, says the Intel (INTC) chief, a year from now will be worse. “This is the deepest one I’ve seen in my lifetime. All the smart people that I talk to tell us the U.S. is in for a two-to-three quarter recession,” Otellini said. “Unemployment peaks lag GDP. We’ll see much larger unemployment a year from now.” In its weekly report, the Labor Department said new claims for unemployment dropped slightly to a seasonally adjusted 481,000 for the week ending Nov. 1. But every day more job cuts are announced. In the past week alone, big tech companies like Cisco (CSCO), Electronic Arts (ERTS), Motorola (MOT), and Xerox (XRX) have announced layoffs or hiring freezes. Otellini said he was grateful to take a break from the doom and gloom to attend the Web 2.0 conference. The Intel exec provided a 20-minute demo of forthcoming Intel products and answered questions from Web 2.0 host John Battelle. |
Thanks, I wish more people has this choice, but me being gone might help some IPA guy or gal. My first chance to come back will be in May or I can extend for another 6 months till the end of time.

I believe the Brown Armageddon is indeed peaking over the horizon. Too many RIGHT-SIZE, DOWNTURN & EFFICIENT articles have been talked about and printed at Brown lately.
We are way over staffed on the -8 for current flying. -200 less retirements than planned for this year and a HORRIBLE economy with freight down 9% this year. DHL deal rumored to be a fraction of what they thought, if at all. No way those FAVRE's in ANC are going anywhere now with losing 30% of their retirement. You drop the -8, you can cut all the over 65 FE's, the bottom 70 FE's are to JR to displace anywhere. How many does that add up to? Too many. |

Oh well, I give up. Repeated attempts to shed light on your employer is met with certitudes of furlough. Enjoy. Guess we'll see if UPS will concede market share to Fedex. If so, I was wrong and you all were right. <g> Out of this discussion. ;) Good luck to all.
I'm thinking UPS might now furlough just to say, hey you were asking for it so here you have it... |
I think that UPS may very well announce a furlough, however I don't think that they will end up going through with it. The part of of our contract that allows the IPA to call an opentime and JA ban is huge. When UPS is "right sized" they JA all the time, if no one is accepting JA's the boxes don't move, if the boxes don't move the furlough is cancelled. Simple.

What is the limit of " emergency M flying " while IPAers are furloughed?
I know now if no one accepts the JA it goes to a M pilot. |

Salty please don't go - your voice is the only one of facts and reason versus fear mongering here...
I'm thinking UPS might now furlough just to say, hey you were asking for it so here you have it... Thanks for your input. Can you answer something before you go ... Did UPS hire additional flight qualified managers when the 9/11 furloughs were threatened ? Know what I am getting at ... |
