380 vs 777 vs displacement pay protection
Hi Guys,
I saw a couple of Emirates a380's at JFK and got to wondering.....If FDX cancelled the 380 buy due to delays, would the slump/ rebound cycle make that A/C available around the time lift would be required again? Could the 777 be written in disappearing ink for the 380 to arise from the ashes.....just wondering. Part 2: My present employer just issued a system wide bid/ displacement for pre-merger pilots. No furloughs, but a loss of higher seats for lower seats. A lot like FDX, except there is pay protection for 36 months........a provision like that would sure soften the blow @ any carrier suffering displacements to get guys in the "correct seat". Training costs and pay protection will also slow down the bean counter's inclination to take such steps. Might be worth asking the LEC/MEC about for next negotiations. Good luck and best regards, BG |
FedElta,
You obviously had a long career at FDX. I have had only a short one, but I think I have picked up on the current way of doing business. Don't forget we are the company that ran a useless excess bid in the 727 SO seat just to get 50 back up front (JL?) and displaced some junior 727 CAs to FO seats. There were even complaints about how some of these junior CAs 'gamed the system' to work HKG CA passover pay out of that bid or the one before it. No empathy at all for the loss of seat due to a quasi legal bid. I've seen pay protections used elsewhere but can't see it used here. They just don't think that way. |
Good questions, I still fail to see how you justify the A380 when they dumped the 747 because of fleet age and the claim they not filled to capacity. You would think they would stick with the 777 or maybe some second hand 747s being they are readily available. But my opinion is proof I am new to FedEx.

Fedex WILL NOT get any 747's. This is a long beat up item that the company will not use them because of loading issues. Said and done.

I heard they considered to bring 747s back but now that UPS got them, they'll never look at 747s again... :D
That is why we created the MD10 - no one else has them and no one ever will  |

Yeah, but IMHO that's more about not 1. Cancelling a construction contract that was already started (big bucks,) 2. Getting an architectural firm to redesign a building that's more right-sized for 777s (more big bucks,) and 3. a delay of a year or two to get the new design built, when 777s will be on the property this fall. You'll rarely hear maintenance complain about a hanger that's a little too big. |
