Jan 30th UPS Manager Meeting

Don't sell! It takes the bank at least a year to kick you out of the house. Make sure to get an equity line and all the credit cards you can get, then file for bankruptcy after you've milked every last drop of your good credit.. Then move in with your in laws.

UPS has a very strong indentity. The corporate culture is no accident, it is very different from other companies, and it is engrained in management and will be perpetuated into the future. Part of that culture is the blue collar work ethic and a disdain of nepotism. The UPS belief is that you should start at the bottom, get your hands dirty, and slowly work your way up the ladder. That's why our corporate execs all started out as part-time package loaders, went to college, and were subsequently promoted up the chain. It's similar to the military only a little more fair.
Whenever an ACP introduces himself to a newhire class at UPS he is instructed to give his bio and if he was ever a line pilot at UPS he is supposed to say that he was promoted into management. We all know that many of the managers would love to take the "demotion" and be a line pilot. But the UPS culture is such that they have to pretend that it's a big honor to get hired into management when it's not.
Many UPSers spend a good portion of their career breaking their backs loading trucks. Those that become senior managers remember their roots very well despite their huge paychecks. They believe they put the time in and earned their lifestyles. These are the folks in Atlanta making the decsions about the airline right now. No manager at the airport knows squat. Only a few on Hurstbourne know a little more than that. The folks in Atlanta hate the fact that we as pilots make as much as we do when many of us have only been "Brown" a few years. But more than that they absolutely can't stand the fact that we have had ACPs hired off the street in 2005-2007 that are making $180,000 a year. To the Atlanta boxhead execs they can't understand why line pilots don't want to be management. It drives them nuts that we have had to hire MANAGERS from off the street. The airline is the only place in the company where a first year employee is a manager making 180k and again ATL hates this. One of the most senior UPS execs told me this.
No line pilot should be worried about this meeting on Jan 30th. However, if I was a newhire management pilot or a management pilot not in the good graces of Atlanta I would be very worried about my job.
