How many moved from the lower 48? Would you do it again? What area do you live in, and why? Do you have kids in public school?

How was the move package from Memphis?

So you want the pilots that WANTED to live up there to give you the gouge on how to uproot them. Good luck with that.

Didnt know the purple nuggets WANTED to live up there........he's not uprooting them, the company is. Lighten up.

The ones that elected to move up there did. As well as those that bid for it in the MOAB. He IS uprooting them. The company is not putting a gun to his head. He has a choice if he loves MEM so much, it's called the 757. If is seniority entitles him to ANC, fine. But he is on his own. Don't tell me to lighten up, BOY!

Don't know that it is so much uprooting as it is protecting his pay. Last time I checked the 757 doesn't pay as much as the 11. You are correct, "he has a choice". Seniority entitles him to it. period.

I'll answer your question. Simply put. no I would not move up here, if I had known what I do now.

I spent 20 years in the AF and moved about as many times, I have lots of experience with all sorts of different states,towns and schools. The schools up here are not that great. A lot of private school options though. What's that say about the schools.

The cost is outrageous. I posted in the other thread the cost for heating and electric, but I didn't include things like my $8,000 property tax bill, the cost of gas and the fact that any good house will cost you at least $200-$220/SF. The bottom line is expect to spend about $2,500-$3,000 more per month to live here, than to live somewhere in the mid-west for a comparable living arrangement. Basically the only places more expensive than here are NY and Calf and yes I've lived in Calf.

As for the weather, Google the weather almanacs and you will find out Anchorage gets less days of clear weather than Seattle. The ones I looked at said there are on average 240 cloudy days a year in Anchorage. Last summer we had less than 10 days above 70 degrees and only about 15 days all summer where it didn't rain. Seriously, if you don't believe me check the almanacs.

Now ask yourself how you would like to spend 3 months a year with very little daylight and -30F temperatures. The good part is after a December/January like that, 0 degrees feels warm.

Do you have any family in the lower 48 you would like to visit? Don't expect to visit them much. When I moved up here I figured with the extra pay I would just suck it up and buy the airline tickets and visit twice a year. Well I tried that the first year. By the time you buy your family airline tickets at $1,000 a piece, because Alaska Airlines knows when Spring/Christmas breaks are, you'll rack up $10,000-$15,000 a year with travel expenses.

I normally would not be this negative but since you asked, that's my take on it. If I could figure out a way to move to some nice town in the mid-west, I'd do it in a heart beat (I think the move package requires you to move within 100 miles of the base i.e. Memphis). I could buy round trip tickets for all my trips and still be money ahead. Oh and by the way, I did commute the first year I was hired, good luck with commuting up here. Those seats are pretty full and going to get fuller.
