Mt. Redoubt eruption
From the observatory in Alaska:
2009-03-22 23:02:22 An eruption of Mt. Redoubt began at approximately 22:38 AKDT, March 22, 2009 (0638 UTC). AVO is raising the aviation color code to Red and the alert level to Warning. Initial height of the eruption cloud is estimated at less than 20,000 ft above sea level at present. Further reports will be issued as more information becomes available. 2009-03-22 23:20:21 Current estimate for eruption cloud height are 50,000 ft above sea level. From local news: Wind is blowing ash cloud north. Ash fall expected in Anch and Mat Su valley around 2am. |
Latest reports indicate that the volcano has erupted after increased seismic activity. Unrest at the volcano increased rapidly. Seismic activity and other volcanic signs escalated and culminated into a serious volcanic eruption. Experts in the US Geological Survey had already color-coded alert levels ‘orange’ meaning that the volcano would erupt anytime.
The Air Force says the ash cloud from Mount Redoubt’s eruption is expected in Anchorage by 2am local time. Alaska Airlines has turned back four flights bound for Anchorage to their cities of origin, after the eruption of Mount Redoubt. They are also twittering: As of 12:27AM March 23, 2009, AVO has recorded three large explosions at Redoubt volcano. Twitter / alaska_avo |
NWS forecasts ashfall:
SUSITNA VALLEY- INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...TALKEETNA...WILLOW...CANTWELL Didn't mention Anchorage. Post any new info as it comes. |
I hope no one who works for the "potential" furloughing cargo giant, volunteers to help the company move the jets out of ANC.

As of 2:00AM March 23, 2009, AVO has recorded FOUR large explosions at Redoubt volcano at the following times: March 22 10:38PM March 22 11:02PM March 23 12:14AM March 23 01:39AM The National Weather Service has issued an Ashfall Advisory. Link: National Weather Service, Anchorage Forecast Office - Redoubt Coordination Latest tv news, an hour after the 4th eruption, is saying they are not expecting much ash fall in Anchorage, at this time. However Alaska Air is diverting it's inbound flights. Airport is still open at this time. Upper level winds are blowing towards Anchorage, at the 40,000 ft level. Most of the ash fall at this time is expected in the Susitna valley, north of the volcano. Anchorage has not activated emergency services yet. The Mat-Su valley, apparently has. |
Hopefully all the "do-gooders" at Brown can refrain from helping the company out on moving airplanes out of ANC if it comes to that. Let them use the reserves. NO JA's here!

Flew by it yesterday, some puffs during the daylight.

ANC Ops...?
A friend shared with me recently that the airport is open, but no westbound flights for now.
When someone learns something, please share. I'm certainly not expecting the co. to do so anytime soon... better 2/3 of my crew is in the hotel in ANC scratching their heads, too. |

Many flights from several airlines cancelled today. Alaska now flying southbound to Seattle. The volcano has quieted down somewhat, but the winds aloft forcast for tomorrow come much closer to Anchorage. If the activity increases again, could mean more delays and/or cancellations. Some flights flew to Fairbanks today, but the crew was in VMC conditions during daylight hours to "See and Avoid" with a reroute further east than normal.
|
Called FDX ops in ANC today. Nothing west bound tomorrow. Flights coming in from Asia going to OAK.
...stuck in ANC on RSV  |
Scheduled to fly ANC-EWR tomorrow. That leg has disappeared but nothing on the schedule to get me to EWR Just waiting to see what they come up with
Jumpseats called and said all flights to ANC are rerouted to OAK. |
Please be careful with the rumors here, you can go here: FlightAware > Pilot Resources > Airport > Anchorage Intl Airport (Anchorage, AK) [PANC/ANC] and check to see if your connection is actually inbound and get a jump on schedules/jumpseats. Flightaware will often have this info long before our people will share it.
Looks like the ash is settled and no further ash warning issued. Things could start moving quickly.:) Looks like some operators are planning east and westbound flights tonight. And there is this, KSDF-ZSPD:http://flightaware.com/live/flight/UPS80 |

In SEL because NRT wasn't open this morning, and we were supposed to go to SZX tomorrow but wait now we are going SEL/OAK early AM. Mother nature is really messing with us!! Hope Mt. Redoubt quiets down soon. Everyone out here in Asia is being revised to cover????????

Apparently the Einstein's in SDF didn't know the possibility of Redoubt erupting. I talked with scheduling and they don't have a clue as to what is going on, she said as far as she knew they were operating normally:cool:. What Z time is it where you are????

Brown had a B767 and B747. The B767 eventually launched to the Pac Rim. B747 waiting for a part. So Einstein brings in another B747, I think it had a part for the grounded one ... just before ANC ATC closes the airport for arrivals and departures until daylight hours. Guess no one saw that one coming either ... Sure it is quiet here now and planes are getting into ANC, but at any given moment Redoubt can awaken and shut this place down for a long time. What the braintrust in KY hasn't considered is that today the winds are shifting and the next eruption will send ash right up the Cook Inlet towards ANC. What happened to that "eruption plan" they were so proud of ? Oh Yeah, they did have the Commodore C64 computers in the check-in area covered in a plastic trash bag ! :D |

That is probably the primary responsibility of one of our illustrious ACPS's! |

Redoubt Volcano Latest Observations
2009-03-26 12:38:35 A large eruption of Redoubt volcano occurred at 09:24 AKDT (17:24 UTC) this morning. National Weather Service reports the cloud height to be at least 65,000 ft above sea level and pilot reports indicated a plume height of 60,000 ft. Since this event, a few smaller events have occurred but these did not generate plumes above about 20,000 feet. The eruption at 9:24 AKDT also produced a lahar in the Drift River valley that was detected by seismic instruments. An ashfall advisory is in effect until 4 PM for the western Kenai Peninsula. High level ash (above 30,000 feet) is forecast to pass over Anchorage, but is not expected to produce ash fall. |
