Global logistics: FedEx Express introduces new Asia-to-Europe next-day service

Jeff Berman, Group News Editor -- Logistics Management, 10/19/2009

SHANGHAI-FedEx subsidiary FedEx Express recently announced it has rolled out additions to its overnight services between Asia and Europe in the form of a new next-business-day service connecting mainland China, Hong Kong, and Singapore with France and Germany.

FedEx officials said that the Asia-to-Europe connection is a key lane, with the Asia-to-Europe air cargo market expected to expand at an average annual rate of 6.5 percent over the next two decades.

They added that of the three markets the new Asia-to-Europe next-business day service supports, mainland China and the European Union have become two of the biggest traders in the world, with EU imports from China up 6.5 percent in 2008.

And Germany's economy, according to FedEx grew at an annualized pace of 1.3 percent in the second quarter of this year, while France's economy grew 1.4 percent over that same span.

FedEx added that this new service will provide shippers with a one-business-day transit time to Europe for FedEx International Priority shipments originating from Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore destined for Frankfurt, Cologne, and Paris from Monday to Thursday.

In an interview with LM, David L. Cunningham, president, Asia-Pacific, FedEx Express, said that the company is constantly assessing how to improve its services to meet customer demand, which drove the planning and launch of this new next-business-day connection between Asia and Europe.

"Europe is a top trading partner for many countries in Asia-Pacific, and FedEx has been a leader in facilitating trade between these two regions," said Cunningham.

"As the global economy begins to show signs of stabilization, companies will likely begin restocking inventories, which will help push demand for exports from Asia.

By adding this enhanced service to Europe, we are giving businesses here another powerful tool to capture growth opportunities for their businesses with fast, reliable service."

Cunningham also explained that this service gives shippers a real competitive advantage by enabling them to offer their customers in Europe a faster time to market for their products.

As an example, he noted that the EU was the second-largest export market for Hong Kong's electronics industry, which is its largest merchandise export earner, accounting for more than 50% of Hong Kong's total exports in 2008.

"This is an industry that depends on fast-cycle logistics to get the latest technologies into the market and this new service gives them that tool," he said.

In terms of competitive advantages for FedEx Express, Cunningham said this offering adds to its strong portfolio of services that it offers to Asia-based shippers looking to tap market opportunities in Europe.

FedEx, according to Cunningham, has been focused on continually improving access to Europe over many years, which has included the launch of the express air cargo industry's first express direct flight from mainland China to Europe in March 2005, and doubling the capacity between Europe and Asia during the launch of a first overnight express daily flight between India and China in September 2005.

Facility expansions: FedEx Express also recently announced it has completed two major infrastructure projects in its global network: the expansion of its European Hub at Charles de Gaulle in Paris, France and the expansion of its bonded warehouse at Guadalajara International Airport in Jalisco, Mexico.

The company said that the FedEx Express European Hub at Charles de Gaulle is now the largest FedEx hub outside the United States.

This hub has 300 weekly flights, is comprised of 828,832 square feet, increased its sort area from 533,889 square feet to 775,001 square feet, and increased its sort capacity from 54,000 to 61,500 documents and packages per hour.

FedEx said the Guadalajara location will provide shippers with increased access to the region's most prolific industries including textiles, pharmaceuticals and electronics, as well as support businesses of any size shipping internationally to and from 10 Mexican states and Mexican domestic shipments, with larger and faster shipment processing capacity and custom clearance efficiencies.

The warehouse now comprises more than 84,000 square feet, reduces shipment processing time by up to 40 percent with a sorting capacity of 4,000 packages per hour, and increases storage capacity by 83 percent, said FedEx.
