Interview Prep - Atlas?

Anyone have experience with and/or feedback for a company doing specific Atlas Air Cargo interview prep?

Other than specific Atlas info, what other interview prep service would you recommend?

airfish 03-07-2010 12:14 PM

I interviewed there a few years ago. I went into the interview very cold, less than 36 hours from phone call to interview. We did paperwork for a couple of hours, bring your logbooks. Then it was an HR interview with a chief pilot, an hr rep, and a manager. Talk to the person asking the question.

Then there was a sim in a classic 74. This was the truly nice part of the interview. Simple take off and a simple sid. Enter holding, check airman configures the jet for landing, shoot an ILS, and land. Keep the power on until 50 feet, then go to idle and flare a little.

That was how it was in '05. Hope it helps.

I thought they had guys on furlough? Has everyone been recalled?

atpcliff 03-07-2010 12:41 PM

Everyone has been recalled, according to other posters...hiring soon. Not heard about poolies.

Beagle_Lover 03-07-2010 02:45 PM

It looks like the window is open for resumes. Judy Tarver at fltops.com and Adam Hughes are good for prep.

TurboDVR42 03-07-2010 03:26 PM

What are the published mins?

TurboDVR42 03-07-2010 03:29 PM

Never mind...found it on the website (never seen it before there)

bubi352 03-07-2010 04:23 PM

Do you guys have a crew base in UK?

Talon1011 03-07-2010 04:44 PM

I'm not there yet..still awaiting the call...but the Stanstead base is no more. The bases now in effect are current on the Atlas info page of this website.

Twin Wasp 03-07-2010 06:02 PM

There's some deal in their training program, the way I heard it, you can't get the type in the sim with less than the 1000 PIC turbine. There have been pilots hired with less, mainly upgrading FEs.

Lazyb757 03-07-2010 08:08 PM

Thanks for all the input.

OleDawg 03-08-2010 05:03 AM

Any ideas on when calls are going out? Does anybody know what it really takes to get a call...personal rec., international wide body time, etc?

742Dash 03-08-2010 07:05 AM

There have been significant changes in Atlas's management and training department since they last interviewed. Therefor I would take any airline-specific interview prep with a grain of salt. Or less.

Atlas normally fully types the first officers. Two of the three sims are level C, which in turn drives the turbojet requirements. There have been some non-typed FOs in the past, and there is the one level D sim. Whether this means that they will back off the turbojet requirements remains to be seen.

Understand the company's business model. Understand that it is really just a big charter operation with big airplanes, and that it suffers from all the resulting chaos. Overall, considering the people involved, I would expect a fairly relaxed interview process.

Right now a personal rec short lists your resume...
I also heard Polar may hire very soon?????

atpcliff 03-09-2010 09:18 AM

Hi!

Polar and Atlas r integrating. All hiring is via Atlas. Another poster said 1st new hire will go below last Atlas/Polar guy on combined list.

Not sure on that one. There was a rumor that Polar was going to grow, but nothing has materialized, yet.

Hmmm so with that being said.. will they just send all the new hires to -400?
and has anyone been called yet?

BBJay 03-11-2010 09:45 AM

Has Atlas called anybody yet? Got my resume in recently and hoping for a call. Is there any word on class dates or if new hires will be -200, -400, or is the LCF going to be a different schedule? What about the Sonair crews, different line?

Whaledriver 03-11-2010 10:29 AM

We have no firm info, but it appears that the new hires will go to the -400. The classic needs will probably be filled with recalls and upgrading FE's.

SonAir flying is just bidding IAH as your base. No info available on the LCF's. This bid is adding 8 captains to the classic, and ten to the -400. Doesn't sound like that will fill the needs of the LCF. Atlas NEVER plans six months ahead.

Word from MIA, new hire classes will be starting mid April.

Disclaimer, all the info above is subject to and will probable change. This is Atlas, after all.

yamahas3 03-11-2010 10:52 AM

Anyone know if an RJ driver with no connections to Atlas stands a chance?

its like the lottery ,you cant win if you dont play, send it in !

Know if you'd have to give up your seniority number(s).

At the time I was hired five years ago, no you didn't. Now that things have changed around the airline business who knows.

UnusualAttitude 03-13-2010 04:19 PM

I can't seem to find out how many days off a month one might expect. I realize that you might fly 18 day trips but followed up by how much time at home?

Also, is HSV really a base? I live in BHM and that would be excellent. I might have to move Atlas up my target list for sure and start begging for some help.

Thanks folks.

UA

Beagle_Lover 03-13-2010 05:56 PM

31 day month=14 Days off
30 day month=13 Days off

Yes, HSV is a base and most junior at this point. MIA and HSV have short trips, good for those that live there.
A new bid is being run and should be published next week.
Good Luck.

skypiratedc10 03-14-2010 04:18 AM

Hey Beagle Lover is Kevin Riebsam still working for you guys? If so I might ask a favor and have you pass along my email address if it wouldn't be too much trouble. I have an app in and for now he's the only one I know that might still be working there.

Any ideas on how many retirements are coming in the next few years?

I have many questions about works rules and scheduling, but I'll start with that.

Twin Wasp 03-15-2010 05:32 PM

I think 2 this year, about 5 the next two years, then about 25 a year for the next 7 or 8 years.

BushwickBill 03-21-2010 04:26 PM

Wow this is amazing news. I am still short of the total time. However I am close on everything else. I would really like to do this kind of flying at some point in my life. I'm trying to find out what life is like for a pilot who did this type of flying.

Right now I have a pretty good gig not because of pay or schedule but my current job allows me to stay in shape and have some free time where I like to be. Being active and happy are very important to me. Are there pilots who fly for this kind of operation who are fit and enjoy the outdoors?

Where are the bases located? What is the quality of life like? What is a typical schedule like? I saw the ratio of days of. Do you get them all at once? Can you jump seat to far off places with a surfboard?

Since I still have about a year or more to get enough total time and who knows what will happen with the economy. However the retirement numbers look promising!

Twin Wasp 03-22-2010 11:16 AM

Current bases are JFK, MIA, HSV, IAH, LAX and ANC. The company owns you for 17 days. Unless you live in base, I think most pilots bid to do it all at once so you could have 10 days off together. All I did was bid stuff in the middle of the month to keep from having one month run into another and be on the road for 40 days. Flexibility is a good thing, the flights and cities you see on your schedule at the begining of the month will not match what you fly. They went into 120 or 130 some countries last year, just try naming 100 countries off the top of your head. Your body will take a beating, just about the time your body clock gets reset to Dubui, you're off to Hong Kong.

I have no idea about the surfboard, not much beach in Bagram.

I'm sure it's been posted before but here's a 200 pilot's take on life at Atlas.

How many credit hours do you guys average a month?
Does Atlas or Polar go to Rio or Sao Paulo on a regular basis?
Thanks,
