Cargo companies - General Domicile Question
 

Hi all,

I'm wondering if one would like to join a cargo compnay, US based one ofcourse. Atlas, Polar, Kalitta (please don't shoot me.... i'm not matching the levels of those.... just naming a few) - Since all of these companies fly all around the world, if I have a house/home somewhere in Europe, but a place not served by 'my' cargo company - could I still live there and ask the company to be enlisted for a sart of a trip while the airplane is in Europe instead of having to go to the US to start a trip?

Is such a thing even possible, would they mind if I live on the other side of the planet and commute with an average of 15 hours flight commute?

Are you free to jumpseat on american carriers only? Do you get any IDs on OALs?

You could if you worked for UPS. I have a friend that flys for UPS and lives for the most part in South Africa. He uses his travel bank to D/H to Cologne or Tapei to start his pairings.

. . . and FDX too.

We have folks living ALL over the place. . and a similar monthly 'bank' if you are senior enough to bid 'DH' trips. As in every thing else about working at an airline . .seniority is life.

Don't know . .but kind of doubt the 'low rent' cargo (like Kalitta) folks have similar modus operandi. .but it would help if you listed a general part of the world where this theoretical 'home' is. . and folks answering can be a little less general.

Well, idially home would be Israel. If it's possible at all to start a trip in Europe somewhere. However, please bare in mind, I am looking into those 'lower' rent cargo ops....

We used to have a guy that commuted from Tel Aviv when I first got hired!

Yeah . .we had a guy from Tel Aviv in my class too. . 1/76 . .Avi Benarzi. .. didn't make it through Probation though . . as he had more 'P-51' time than anything else in his log. .using one of our Flight Managers . . who also happened to be Israeli . .to get the job. Essentially. .it was a 'snow job'. . since he couldn't keep the Falcon flying straight.

Told everyone that he flew combat in the F-4 in the IAF . .and had the chutzpah to go out to talk to kids in elementary schools and other local venues . . about life in the Israeli AF . . something he had never done.

Can't tell you about how the low end of the food chain works . .but FedEx has a Paris domicile (last time I checked) for the AirBus . .and once you guys kill all the friggin' Hezbos . .life might return to near normal . .so a commute to Charles De Gaulle should not be that tough.

BUT. .you gotta get hired. .first .. and then build enough senority to hold the right seat of an AirBus, domiciled out of Paris . . could take a while:(

Paris isn't a pilot domicile, but it is a hub. But you can do alot of bus flying in and out of there - with dead heads to/from Memphis (which you can deviate from). It is called SIBA - Special International Bid Award, for the Airbus. SIBA goes pretty senior, too.

See. . I never bothered to learn how to speak AirBus . . so all these 'details' never sunk in. :rolleyes: . . I DO know there are a number of folks actually living in Europe . .or spending a good portion of thier time over there. . when not flying.

That sounds like a plan, an avenue I might persue one day. In anycase, maybe this would be a good time to let you know i'm still about a 1000 pic jet hours away from all of this, but am interesting in hearing how cargo life is and trying to scoop for info for my own purposes anywhere I can.

As for Mr. Benarzi - on behalf of my people, I sinerely apologize for his behaviour and lack of skills. I do not know Mr. Benarzi, but this story doesn't surprise me one damn bit. I apologize for the kindof taste it left behind, a taste of deciet for Israelis. I can assure all of you, I will work harder to prove this wrong in the future.
