I'm just glad 70 less people that will not be unemployed.
How can you continue to NOT GET IT? Yes, I know what saber rattling is, and since you obviously don't, I'm including a common definition of it: "noun -
the ostentatious display of military power (with the implied threat that it might be used)". You see, it's really about the implied threat. So UPS didn't sabre rattle. What they did, and what they have a history of doing, was to cut off their nose (the furloughed guys) to spite their face (their bottom line, as well as their employees, and worst of all, their customers and potential customers.)
Just so you understand, the company holds the vast majority of cards. The union, not so much. Any sabre rattling done by a union, is just that. They are not allowed to do more, at least not until they are released from arbitration, and even then, especially with a company like UPS (or FedEx) or any other airline that is a major player in its industry, they will probably not be allowed to strike.
Throughout your comments, you seem to think that the company and the union are equals in the equation. Nothing could be further from the truth. I just don't remember any union furloughing some management types, or eliminating management pay raises or bonuses or reducing benefits.
With the above in mind, you need to stop kidding yourself and face the facts of life. The company is in charge. The union is there to do its best to uphold the contract and protect its members rights under said contract. They are not equals, and contrary to todays' environment, there's not a damn thing that any of us can do about it. Life's not always fair.
