UPS ANC Newbie Gouge
FedExers and NWA cargo guys based in ANC, help! There will be a lot of us coming up to join you in ANC in the coming months and years, including ALL of our new hires ;) Here is a start, but it is info from a few years ago--
Food and Drink Humpy's (a fun place with excellent Alaska food and lots of beer choices) Glacier Brewhouse (more fancy, but large spacious rest. and awesome food) Moose's Tooth Pizza (the best pizza in Anchorage, if not the entire Northwest) Snow Goose (downtown) F Street B&G (popular flight crew esp. FedEx hangout) Gwennies (need a taxi, but awesome b-fasts and food in general) Nightlife Chilkoot Charlies (5 bars in 1, and live bands 5 times a week. Voted best nightclub in America one time by Playboy mag.) Humpy's Darwin's Theory Fly by Night Club Great Alaskan Bush Co. Tax rebate every December is how much...? Are crash pads hard to find? |
No personal income tax. Every individual's share of the state's oil money investment account should be about $1100 this year.
|
Add this restaurant to your list: Orso. It's downtown right next to the Glacier Brewhouse.

It is a greasy Spoon to be sure...........but a great breakfast or Halibut Sandwich for lunch and it is entertaining to say the least. Shari, the Female proprietor (AKA The Soup Nazi) is an absolute hoot. She boots out people for not "ordering" properly or if they are not patient with the slow service. She constantly states "This is not a fast food restaurant!" and she means it! |
Is Wings and Things still there? I believe it was off of 4th or 5th street in the down town
Damn, i miss living in ANC. I used to live on 5th street down below Simon & Seaforts. Lifter |
Simon and Seaforts is high on my list. Expensive, but worth it considering the phenomenal food.
|
For a great steak, try Club Paris.
Make sure you have a reservation first....it's that good. |

Don't forget the "White Spot" Cafe on 4th Ave about 3 blocks past where Blondie's used to be.

Breakfast, lunch
Snow City Cafe close to the Captain Cook Hotel, Good food and you can always strike up a conversation with a local or another crewmember on layover at the counter.
Tried Platimum Jacks, found it pricy and abit modern metal for my taste. This used to be La Mex. |

Yes. For breakfast, try their "crabby omelette". Across the street is a good ice cream shop, the "Loose Moose" or something like that. Perfect after a bike ride along the Cook Inlet. :) |
ANC crashpad
I will be commuting up to ANC (for UPS) and have been trying to get a hold of any crashpads with Alaska Airlines flight attendants. If anyone has a phone number for their crew lounge, I would greatly appreciate it or if you know of some females who have a place near the airport or downtown (by the Marriott) would be ideal, that would be of great help. Thanks.

Pre-dinner cocktail
The 515 Cocktail Club on 4th, just north of F Street is a fantastic place to start out your evening. The Gas Light and The Pioneer Club on 4th are also good spots. I have standards, but they are very low.:)

I've had the extact same thought for several years but ... I could never convince my wife it was a good idea. She's usually a good sport, not sure why she won't just relax and see this my way? Mark |

Mark I keep picturing a crashpad full of the girls from that TV show Charmed. |
More like the Golden Girls.

Bernie's is a good bar with excellent talent. It was better when it was a small martini bar but has since expanded into more of a club-type joint. They managed to retain some of the charm by keeping bocci (sp) ball in the back yard.
I went to high school with all the bartenders at F street so I try to steer clear of there. But I must second fbh's rec for the Pioneer Bar. All locals and some good pool/dart games going. I have a special fondness for the Pio as I did my 21st birthday there. Do not come to Pioneer if you're scared of bar fights or people puking in the bathroom. As far as crashpads go I know alot of guys do the Inns and B&Bs because they can be done nighty and provide transportation. Puffin Inn and Inlet Towers maybe? I'm sure someone can clear that up. Above all remember what being Anchorage based means: No flying disputed pairings and no autopilot 'till cruise.:D Cheers |
I was up there on usaf reserve trip this winter a couple of times. billeting put us up in the Voyager Hotel. The gvmt rate was only $29 mid winter, and its right downtown, walking dist to humpies, a bar I think call northernlights on 3rd st (...they have shuffle board and pool), and all the rest. I bet you could get that rate as a regular.

Good ole Chilkoot Charlies...college-aged females abound!

Is it a good place to have kids? I can tell you that it is certainly a Good Place to Make kids, especially in the Winter! :) Seriously, my friends who live there absolutley love it. I like it up there too but my better half prefers the lower 48. |

Where is that? Grab a Mid-Town Brown and a Brewhouse Favorite! |
Looks good, but out of walking range from the Marriott

Is it a good place to have kids? More entertainment gouge: Let's not forget about the Moose's Tooth's sister establishment the Bear Tooth. Located in sunny Spenard, they offer great lunch in the cafe, a great restaraunt with more than just pizza, and a movie theatre where you can eat dinner, drink beer and catch a flick. Plus they host some good live music occasionally. Phlyer |
