Default Question for Senior UPS pilots...

About 25 (+) years ago I was flying night freight in a DC9-15F for a company out of RDU called...Ryan, or Orion, I really can't remember which, that was many, many beers ago. The DC9's were owned by Purloator but the pilots were from Orion/Ryan(?). This was before UPS had their own pillots, they also contracted their pilots from several different companies and mine was one of them. Our HQ was in RDU but if you were on the 727 you could fly anywhere that UPS or Purolator flew. Purolator's hub was IND.

Anyway, I was hired at Delta in Sept. 1985 while my DC9 sim partner stayed on and was picked up by UPS when they decided to go -in house- with their own pilot group. The last time I saw him we were both on layovers, in ONT, staying at the same hotel. We bumped into each other at happy hour! BUT, this was before cell phones and email, so I've lost touch with him. I think he was F/O on the DC8 at that time, but that was about 20 years ago. He should be about age 55 or so by now and he should be senior as he got in early.

So, my question is, can one of you help me hunt him down? I'd like to say Hi and catch up on old times, etc. If you think you can help, please send me a Private Message and I'll give you his name and my contact info, maybe you can leave a note in his co. mailbox or something.

Thanks in advance for any help you UPS guys can provide.

BTW, I still prefer hauling boxes to live pax, boxes don't cry and you never have to divert for a medical emergecy for a box! I had one of your Chief Pilots on board going to Dubai about a month ago, along with the parents of the Capt. of the 747. I am sorry for your loss there. One of your guys told me about the cockpit doors being removed to -save weight-, un-frick'n believable...

I have another question for UPS guys if you are out there, I was hired in mid 1991, any idea where I'd be on the seniority list if I had stayed?

You would be a mid level seniority capt in lower 48 and very senior capt in ANC.

You must have worked at Orion, Ryan didn't operate DC-9's back then, just some 727's on contract for Emery and UPS and a handful of 757's, also for UPS.

Yeah, I thought it was Orion but I knew there was also a Ryan and after this many years I forgot which one I worked for! I was only there about 6mo. then got on at DAL, but it was great fun while it lasted.

That DC9-10 was a lot of fun on the BDL-BOS leg, it was nearly empty and went like a rocket! I always bid the IND-BDL-BOS trip with the BOS layover as I could drive home to NH, sleep until about 3pm, go sailing in the afternoon, and then get back in the jet later that night.

The thing that impressed me was this; when we would stop in BDL at about 5:00am, there was a UPS 727 that came in right behind us, there would sometimes be two or three guys in suits and ties, out on the ramp, one with a clipboard and one with a stop watch! One night I went over and asked them who they were and what they were doing.

They said they were with UPS (back when UPS HQ was in Hartford I think?) and they were keeping track of how long it took to get their 727 unlaoded. Later I found out they were also keeping track of which Captains were always late, and which ones were always early. Guess which ones they hired?

Let's see...you don't remember who you flew for, but you have a vivid recollection of UPS guys with stopwatches on the ramp...

I flew for one of UPS's contractors, and I never saw anyone with a stopwatch. Ever.

BTW, UPS never was headquartered in Hartford. It was Greenwich.

Is mom letting you use the computer tonight?

From my post above: (back when UPS HQ was in Hartford I think?)

Since I didn't actually work for UPS, I was not sure -exactly- where their headquarters were, and that's why I put "I THINK?" in there...or did your mom let you use the keyboard and you are too dim to see that?

I did see and talk with the UPS clipboard guys quite often while waiting for our DC 9 to be unloaded. Just because you never saw them doesn't mean they weren't there...watching you...with the stopwatch running. How many times were you in BDL at 5am in 1985?

Come to think of it, as soon as the UPS 727 landed, they did crawl into the bushes...

;^)
