Ah, did you notice the tag -"Payne's Predictions"? I'll tell you who's going to win the Super Bowl but I don't have my own TV show.

Yes, the Post Office is losing money hand over fist and yes, mail volume is going down. But postage stamps look so much better in the collection than AWBs.

Odd how in 2001 when the USPS signed its deal with FedEx, it came down to UPS or FedEx. The person evaluating US freight companies had already said Emory, DHL, Airborne, BAX and Kitty Hawk didn't have the network and lift needed. And then he said the USPS and UPS have a bad history so the mail goes on FedEx, no bid required. Then in 2007 the USPS did deal with UPS to carry mail.

Sure, why not? USPS lost $8.5 billion last FY.

... then UPS could pay FDX to carry the volume for them...

I have been thinking this as a possibility for some time now, given the spiraling debt with the USPS. We were the first to deliver to every address but if you read about UPS's history, there has always been a clash with the feds concerning interstate commerce, so how ironic this would be if true. One implication for us in labor would concern a possible no strike clause, since the mail must get through.

Why not. Everyone else is carrying volume for UPS.....all while we have pilots on furlough and a NURP staff that is expanding while the Union is contracting.....

Both UPS and Fed Ex effectively have always had a no strike clause, inasmuch as neither Democrat or Republican executive branches would ever allow us to strike. The only reason the Teamsters weren't shut down in some fashion by the Clinton administration in '97 was their debt to Teamsters. They had no such debt to IPA and we had our hat handed to us when we requested release from mediation in '98. Nobody with any power in DC stands to gain anything by siding with us in any fashion in labor disputes, but they do owe to the PACS of both Fed Ex and UPS.

The power lies in staying in the cockpit and following their rules...look how much IPA has accomplished stopping the furloughs.

We are not "labor" in anyone's eyes but our own...how WE conduct ourselves, how WE stand up for our contracts, how WE stand up for our own. Joe six-pack and everybody in government couldn't possibly care less about our fate if they tried, despite what they might say in public.

We are on our own kids.

I think FDX Ground with their unique delivery structure is the only organization that could make a go of the USPS.

Wow, something worth pondering on APC. I agree 100%.
