FDX MEC Letter to Pilots
Fellow Pilots:
As I am sure most of you know by now, we reached a tentative agreement (TA)
with management late Saturday. The Negotiating Committee and I would
like to take a moment to congratulate all of you on this achievement.
Negotiating a pilot agreement is a process that is never easy, and this one
has been particularly trying. We all slogged through it together and somehow
have managed to maintain both our discipline and our dignity. I believe
these are the key components of a successful negotiating process and the
fact that we have, to this point, held on to both is strong testament to the
leadership of the MEC and officers and our trust in one another. This should
hold us in good stead during the parts of this process that remain.
You may have seen or heard media reports that include some details of
the TA including the pay rate increases over the life of the proposed
contract. It was never our intention for you to hear specifics of the TA in
this manner though given the scope of this deal we are not necessarily
surprised that some details have emerged.
I can confirm that the pay rate increases included in yesterday's Wall
Street Journal article are in fact correct. As to our cornerstone issues, I
feel strongly that those have been effectively addressed in this TA. My
committee and I are very proud of the final, negotiated agreement and hope
that once you have had the opportunity to review all the details, you will
be equally proud.
From the very beginning of this process, I felt it was critical that
we demonstrate to ourselves and to management our ability to conduct and
complete orderly, businesslike negotiations with an acceptable agreement as
the final result. Equally as important was for both the pilots and
management to be able to walk away from the negotiations with their honor
and self-esteem intact. With this TA I feel that we have achieved both of
these goals.
Yesterday, members of the Negotiating Committee and ALPA
representation attorneys began the process of putting the final TA document
together. While final contract language has been written throughout the
negotiations, there is significant indexing and cross-referencing that need
to be completed. The Negotiating Committee plans to present the final TA to
the MEC at a meeting scheduled for September 6 though 8. We will recommend
they approve the Agreement and pass it on for a review and ratification
process conducted by you, the members.
Assuming the MEC approves the TA for submission to you, the complete
document will be distributed immediately following the MEC meeting next
week. A series of yet-to-be-scheduled road show presentations will follow.
It is anticipated that membership ratification balloting would begin the
week of September 18.
Review and ratification by the membership is the cornerstone
democratic process of our Association, and the single most important
responsibility of membership. Please don't take it lightly. Our objectives
in this process have been arrived at with your help and input. We have
worked very hard to ensure that any Agreement we bring to you addresses
those objectives. The Negotiating Committee thinks this has been
accomplished. The final arbiter will be you.
Thanks for your time.
Fraternally,
