3 days in HKG

All

I will be spending 3 days in HKG next week as a part of a required FAM ride.

Since I have never been there before, what do HKG-experienced crews consider the must sees or the must dos?

I'll be staying at the standard crew hotel in Kowloon.

Thx in advance...

Dusk til Dawn in Wan Chai:D

What days are you there?

Flightmech 09-30-2011 07:33 AM

Take the cable car from Tung Chung up to the Buddha, visit The Peak, a ride on the Star Ferry (just to say you've done it!), dinner at the restaurant at the top of the Penninsula Hotel and watch the light show at 2000 (?). A visit to Stanley. I'm sure the regulars can add much more. Buy yourself an Octopus card and travel on the MTR (underground). Easiest way to get around, and most of all enjoy!

NoHaz 09-30-2011 07:57 AM

take the ferry to cheng chau and have some seafood on the waterfront

Wildmanny 09-30-2011 08:08 AM

Go to Ozone at the top of the Ritz Carlton for the best views. Kowloon side.

Hit up Macau at the ferry terminal. A quick Google search will tell you why it rocks.

I arrive on the 5th from CDG, and leave on the 8th to ANC...

The Walrus 09-30-2011 12:49 PM

I don't get there until the 8th.

I would suggest to someone who has never been to take the Big Bus Tour to Stanley Market if the weather is good. It is a good way to see the city. (Check with the Concierge) At night on the Hong Kong side, Wan Chai or the mid-levels in Soho is a good time. Sticky Fingers or the Bulldog in Kowloon.
If you show up in the bar at Morton's in the hotel around 6pm, you will probably be able to find some crewdogs to hang with.

I second the motion!

P.S, The White Stag in Wanchi and Sticky Fingers in Kowloon are a must. There is also an "All you can drink" (or so I've been told;)) Cocktail cruse of Victoria Harbour, starts about 1800 from in front of the Clocktower, by the Star Ferry Terminal, Kowloon

stbloc 09-30-2011 09:39 PM

Wan Chai for night time fun! But the real action is in Macua. Look no further then the any casino.:) For the best view go to the Intercontinental for drinks to watch the light show.

Another good day trip is Lamma Island, 25 minute ferry ride from Hong Kong Central piers. If you're into some walking you can take the ferry to Sok Kwu Wan and hike 1-2 hours to Yung Shue Wan for the ferry back. No private cars on Lamma, it's a laid back and scenic side of HKG. Lots of cheap eats and drinks. Back in Central, Lan Kwai Fong is also worth a look for drinks and nightlife.

Be careful on that ferry trip. The local weather site is called the Hong Kong Observatory. It will give you the latest and greatest as far as local weather and sea conditions. We just had a typhoon swing by a couple hundred miles south of here and the seas were very rough, and another is scheduled in the area in a few days but looks like it will pass south also.
You can't go wrong with the many suggestions that have been offered.;)

Hike to Victoria Peak.

Take Star Ferry from Kowloon to Central. Ride the ferry's upper-deck, which is located in the middle of the Star Ferry pier, around to the right and up the stairs.

At the Central Star Ferry pier go up the stairs to the above ground walkway. Follow the above ground walkway along Man Yiu Street. Pass the Post Office on the left and IFC on the right. Continue on the walkway towards the Charter House.

Just prior to entering the Charter House building take a right on the above ground walkway and cross Pedder Street (you should see a red FANDA Pharmacy sign on the left, down at street level). Take the set of stairs on the left down towards the FANDA Pharmacy.

You're now on the right side of Pedder Street headed against traffic and away from the waterfront. Fanda and Mevas Bank are on your right and CitiBank is straight ahead. Cross Des Voeux Road and stay on right side of Pedder Street. Cross Queen's Road towards Marks&Spencer Department Store. Join Wyndham Street on the left (Marks&Spencer) side of street.

Climb up Wyndham staying on the left side of street. Go all the way to the top of Wyndham and take the crosswalk on the left to the triangle island and then cross to the right. You should end up on the right side of Glenealy with a bunch of steps ahead of you going up the hill.

Climb the right side of Glenealy and veer to the left towards the white overpass and large stone retaining wall. Go under the overpass and walk along the sidewalk next to the stone retaining wall. The road switches names to Albany Road. Stay on right side of Albany Road. The big stonewall on your right is the Hong Kong Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

Continue up the right side of Albany Road past the Zoo and 1 Albany Road highrise. At the intersection of Albany Road and Robinson (it has another overpass), cross the street to the left side of Albany and then cross Robinson.

Continue up Albany Road on the left side, which soon become Old Peak Road. Cross to the right side of Old Peak Rd before you get to the tree that forces you to walk in the street (there is a guardrail coming up on the right side of the road that you’ll want to be on the right side of). Continue up the right side of Old Peak Rd.

Immediately after crossing Hornsey Road take the stairs on the right. If you don't take the stairs you’ll be forced to walk in the street through the narrow tunnel. Continue up the right side of Old Peak Road (don't be fooled by a blue "The Peak" sign pointing in the wrong direction. That sign is for cars driving to the Peak). Continue up the hill on the right side of Old Peak Road next to the pink building. There are stairs and a sidewalk (your choice because both lead to the same place) that follow the pink building up the hill and around to the right.

When the driveway for the pink building forces you to walk in the street, cross to the left side of Old Peak Rd (to the Hillsborough Courts side). Continue up the hill. The sidewalk quickly becomes narrow, but it’s better than walking in road. Continue around the curve to the left (walking against traffic).

After the curve stay on the sidewalk. At the beginning of the guardrail, cross over to the right side of the road (there’s no sidewalk, but it’s a short distance on the road to the trail-head).

Straight ahead is a walking path that takes you to the Peak. It's still the Old Peak Rd, but cars are no longer allowed. Note: not the posts next to the pavilion on the right and not Tregunter Path on the left which takes you down the hill.

There is a bathroom half way up the path at one of the switchbacks.

Towards the top of the path you will come to a fork in the road. There is a place above called Epworth Lodge. If you go right (which is how I usually go) you’ll come up a path behind the Peak Tram Building (with the parabolic structure on top). There will be a few switchbacks and some stairs to climb to the Peak Tram Building.

If you take a left at the fork, you will cross under the tram tracks. After crossing under tracks the path becomes Plantation Road. Stay right (don't go down hill). Look for Findlay Path on the right. That path takes you up an easy path and puts the Peak Tram building on the right.

Pacific Coffee above the Peak Tram has a great view of Victoria Harbor. The mall on the other side of the small plaza (with the Starbucks) has an observation platform on top (also with a great view). There are actually two platforms at the top; one for seeing Victoria Harbor and one for seeing the south side of Hong Kong Island.

Either hike back down or take the Tram down (if you use an Octopus card you get a discount on the tram). Taxi or walk back to Star Ferry pier. Enjoy!

I think after long hike to Victoria Peak we all could use a foot massage. 3 days in HKG and nobody suggested little relaxation… Hmm, gentlemen?

I'm tired just from reading all this. I'll never make it.

Let me simplify it for ya,

Get off the ferry, walk straight ahead to the taxi stand, get in a red taxi and have him drive you to the tram. Now you can enjoy the tram ride up to the Peak:D

In Kowloon, 20 min from the Sheraton, hit up Australian Dairy Company for lunch. Ask the concierge for directions. The best ham & egg samich I've had. It's near the night market...

For dinner, get to the Spring Garden. Again, ask the concierge for directions, it's maybe 15 min from the Sheraton. SG is a famous szechwan/chinese food place. Waiters in black jackets but the food is excellent Cantonese/chinese and prices are reasonable. Place is always packed.

Finally, no trip to HKG would not be complete without going by to see Mr Raymond at Winston Tailor and spend your uniform allowance for the year. AT LEAST get measured if you've already spent your '11 monies and order in the new year.

Take the Star ferry over to the New Territories, then bus to Lady street. There you can buy all sorts of stuff,....

You'll definitely need a "massage" after all that.

Anyone know the schedule for the mid-level escalators? Do those things ever go up? Yes, the catering is beginning to show!

Just spent 2 days here myself. Great time doing the normal "tourist" stuff.
But it's little gems like this that make this job fun.

Was walking back to hotel late at night. While walking the water front just
south of Kowloon Park when I caught these guys in the subway.

Only English song they knew. :)

Took this video last night. Youtube. Safe for work.
