FedEx Backpacks
Ok folks....
I am about finished with my servitude in the 777 training (Pro Instructor) and time to "explore" the world again... So, I see a lot of FedEx aviators use backpacks. Any recommendations? Whale |
There was a thread on this awhile ago.
Here is what I use. Slightly more professional than the backpack, can keep laptop in the bag through TSA screening. Actually have to spend some money though, which is hard for a pilot. Timbuk2 Commute 2.0 Laptop Messenger - Medium - eBags.com |
You may want to save your money. I heard a rumor all FedEx crew are going to be issued the below as a special Christmas gift this year. But you can only use it while wearing the new kilt uniform.

my only suggestion would be instead of zippered pockets on the side it has the netting pockets for water bottles. And a Laptop sleeve.

SwissGear laptop backpacks. Google them. VERY sturdy and you'll see a bunch of us hauling them all over the world. Good luck coming over from the darkside!
|
I'm not a FedEx guy but this is an awesome travel backpack.
CamelBak® - Urban Assault You can take the hydration pack out if you don't want it. I like it in case I do some exploring and want to take along clean water. UA |
Welcome back Whale!
Glad to see you'll be hitting the line soon. Rumors of a bid in March? If you get a backpack, make sure you at all times have both shoulder straps ON when wearing it around the AOC and airports around the globe ;). Seriously though, I would second USMFX's recommendation of a laptop messenger bag for a more professional look, although that Camelbak backpack above seems like a good option... See you on the line bud. |
Please Sweet Baby Jesus, no more backpacks!!

Utterly un-imaginative and will not distinguish you from the herd of drones. This is much better. I roll with the Ellipse, although the Bosphore works well too. Get both and never look back! Louis Vuitton Backpack Reviews | Buy Rolling Suitcase |

See you on the line bud. We'll have to swap seniority since my employee number is lower than yours... Have not heard of one but who knows... I feel like my hair is on fire with all the work on the 777. It's been a fun ride :D |

Louis Vuitton Backpack Reviews | Buy Rolling Suitcase Sweet, I'd pay big bucks for a knockoff elipse. Of course with the Bosphore I could dump my european carry all. |

targus citygear
i've had the swissgear backpack. while it is definitely sturdy, it seemed big and fat, even with nothing in it. good backpack but just lots of padding.
i switched to the targus citygear backpack. love it. very comfortable and not as bulky as others but still holds a ton. great organization pockets. i got mine from amazon. welcome back! |
OK, enough with the backpacks. How about inflight pajamas?
|
Inflight pajamas? "Kimono and tighty whities" Not what I wear but famous and known by many in ANC

Maybe I missed something, how are you guys getting away with not removing your laptop for TSA? Im a backpack user and it has never mattered how I transport my laptop, I always am made to take it out.
Whale, great to see you are coming on line! Very happy for you, so I guess our unplanned deviation enroute to the interview didn't cost us the job after all! |

As your fellow FedEx'er seemed to be posting links for professional briefcases or full on backpacks; I figured I share mine. I've been carrying a standard, college style backpack for my laptop, for about 12 yrs. High Sierra off the discount websites; offer an inexpensive alternative, great construction/materials, lots of pockets/zippers/clips, padding and ventilation. They don't last forever; but, as my company has all our Pubs/Jepps on the aircraft and I carry all the pubs I need on a thumb drive, it's all I need. All I carry, is my laptop, personal headset and plotter in the backpack (but then, I work at a ratty, ACMI cargo carrier - you may need to those cute little briefcases to look the part! ;) ).

As a longtime backpack carrier (one strap only) I have recently gone the route of the messenger bag based on that earlier thread about the Timbuk2 bags. Got this one (in black, not tartan): Command Messenger - Timbuk2 Bags
Love it so far - big enough to carry around all the junk that seems to accumulate and the don't-have-to-take-laptop-out thing is fantastic. TSA hasn't blinked about it once. It slips easily over the handle of any rolling bag and I have to admit I almost feel like a grown-up without the backpack. But they'll have to tear the parka from my cold, dead hands!!:D |
Some thread creep here, do you need to take an iPad out of a case when going through security?
Thanks. |

I've gone 10-12 times through without taking the IPad out.

You guys and your backpacks or "satchels" must find them really handy on layovers, I bet.

REI has a Travelers Backpack made by Outdoor Products.
Very sturdy and lots of pockets. Including a hidden passport pocket. Been around the World with me every month since summer. Holding up great. |

You guys make me sick! You are supposed to be professional airline pilots... some of you are even captains. All this talk about backpacks, etc.
I can't believe you guys spend your hard-earned money on something like a back-pack. As a professional airline pilot, let me tell you what I do. I get a new accessory bag for all my professional equipment almost every trip. It costs nothing, and when it gets worn out, I just get a new one. If you guys are going to call yourselves airline pilots, start acting like it... https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2...2569.JPG?gl=US |
