The "official" rule is that ANY ID issued by an airline with a valid TSA approved security program (pretty much all major airlines) will allow you access into the sterile area of ANY U.S. airport. I'm not crew, I'm a CSA, and I have used my airline ID, out of uniform, without a boarding pass, at many airports, some of which my airline doesn't even fly to, to gain access to the sterile area. The only time I've ever had a problem was at LGA which is a hub for my airport. I was in a rush so I didn't make an issue of it and just showed my boarding pass and drivers license.
I've had out of uniform Fed Ex pilots come to the gate to list without a problem many times. If a TSA screener tries to tell you something else ask for a supervisor.
