Being related to a UPS Pilot...
Hi all I'm currently in flight training. One of my career aspirations is to one day fly for UPS. However my uncle is a captain on the DC-8. I was told that being related to him means that I cannot work for them. Can someone explain this to me?

Nepotism
Last I heard from the Human Remains folks, the limit was first cousin (wife in KY). I think uncle is outta there. Thank your uncle. Try FedEx. Not trying to be a smartass.

Unfortunately, almost everyone in KY is related. UPS might not be the place for you.

I would think if they have a nepotism clause they probably also ask you about it in the interview or on the application. Lie about it and then they have a reason to fire you. Sounds like he's still 10 or 15 years away from UPS and if his uncle is a DC-8 Capt, probably won't have too long to wait.

Nepotism rule

Don't know if it's still the rule, but Delta used to be VERY strict about not hiring a relative of an employee. One senior Captain had to retire early so his son could get a pilot job. Apparently, the rule dated way back to a time when some ground supervisors were grossly favoring relatives in the (non-union) workplace, causing morale problems. The CEO blew up and made an ironclad rule. There were some unusual exceptions. A father and son ended up flying the DC-8 together because one one of them was working for C&S when they merged with Delta. One F/A married a pilot, then took flying lessons and eventually was able to transfer to flight ops herself. (She was a very good pilot, by the way.) They flew together on one trip, when crew scheduling couldn't find any other reserves. |
