I've gotten this check a few times and its nice. Was expecting the first time a big fat check in excess of 15K but by the time unlce sam, the state, ALPA, and a few others take there cut I got a check for about 6,000. Still paid for the following years vacation.
Poor financial planning there, Joc.

To reach your 401K max, you must be putting after-tax dollars into the account. That part's ok. But, you should try to plan your contributions so the excess sick hours are NOT paid out to you in a check. If the excess sick hours are put directly into your 401K, they go in pre-tax. If they are paid out to you in a check...As you have pointed out, they are taxed.

Make cents?

Here's my guess. the MUS request might go through but the excess would knock out any MUD you have left over. After that only MUD requests would be approved and after that you would get a letter from your lifecoach nurse describing the benefits of time away from work

That section of the CBA you referenced just says you can only make-up 72 hours per year (the OP probably read that and formulated his original question). It says nothing about what happens to the excess over 72.

So, we still don't have an answer after 3 pages of sniping like a bunch of girls.
Actually the answer is in this section plus a few others. You can never have a sick bank balance greater than 72 hours. Your DSA can never exceed 686 hours. For example, if you have an 85 hour trip knocked out by sick you can do one of two things. You can call the PAC and have them debit your DSA (if you have any hours in there) to cover the excess over your 72 hour sick bank. Be prepared to provide a doctor's excuse. Or, if you have no DSA balance, you can run a negative sick balance. You can do MUS/MUD to replace the 72 hour sick bank plus the negative hours you borrowed from your DSA. If you are going to be out for an extended period, then other sections of the CBA kick in. At the end of the year, any hours left in your sick bank go in to your DSA. Once it hits 686, you get a deposit to the MPP (Money Purchase Plan) for any excess sick leave on 31 December. If you exceeded the IRS limits for tax-exempt contributions (401, 7% match, etc.) you get a check for the excess. The MPP is not the same as the 401(K) fund because you cannot borrow from it, transfer it, etc. It is only available when you retire.

DSA overage(over 686hrs) does not go into the MPP. If you have not exceeded the limits of IRS 415, it goes into the "sick bank account" of your PRSP.

If you do exceed the 415 limits...The DSA overage would be paid to you in a check, and that money would be considered eligible earnings for the PMPP(B-Plan).

This statement is incorrect. You can in fact have a regular sick bank balance in excess of 72 hours.

You are correct. I got my PRSPs and MPPs confused. Doesn't really matter much to me anymore since I retired today!!!!

Again, I don't really have a dog in this hunt sine I pulled the plug today, but what am I missing in Section 14.C.7 of the CBA. It says: "A pilot is eligible to make up CH drawn from his regular sick account. No more than 72 CH per calander year may be earned in MUS status to replace hours drawn from his regular sick account." How do you get you RSA above 72 hours?
By the way, I planned very poorly and left the Company with 600 hours in my DSA. POOF!!! GONE!!!

I'll use a simple example. RSA balance is 66 hours so you pick-up a 6 hour MUS trip to bring your balance back up to 72 hours. It just so happens that the 6 hour MUS trip is a hard time trip. On the way home you have to circumnavigate some weather and the trip ends up blocking/paying 7 hours (it was really nasty weather). Your RSA balance would then be 73 hours with a MUS bank balance of -1 hour. Lots of other scenarios possible - block over 10, delays, trip revisions, etc.
