Actually FDX didn't have dispatchers up until 3 years ago. It is not a Part 121 requirement.
It's not under Part 121 Supplemental.
It is under Part 121 Flag.

Actually, we did. While not a requirement under Part 121 Supplemental, everyone working as a GOC Specialist was required to have a Dispatcher's certificate as a Fedex requirement to apply for the job. Just like we needed a 4 yr degree to apply for our jobs, even though the FAA doesn't care one way or another.

Actually, we did not.

We had GOC Specialists who happened to have Dispatcher Certificates.

We've also had pilots without 4-year degrees, and pilots without ATPs.

I think a better analogy would be:

We had pilots that had A&Ps...But, they weren't FDX mechanics

or

We had pilots that had law degrees...But, they weren't FDX lawyers

or

We had pilots that were are NRA members...But, they weren't Republicans:rolleyes:

Partial solution

Since the biggest brain donor in the world can see that asking you to make a decision at least 12 hours in advance, based on information you won't receive until 1 hour in advance, it's idiotic. How's about this? We can preselect to be called for draft or not, hide our calendar or not.....how about a VIPS choice (PICs only) of, "Allow non-pilot personal jumpseaters in cockpit".....yes/no? Yes can be the default but would not commit the PIC to taking said jumpseater if conditions/gauge/PIC change. Additionally, the jumpseat system has no problem letting us know when we are "bumped due to a higher priority", so it shouldn't have any difficulty sending an automatic e-mail to the scheduled crew anytime they book a non-pilot personal jumpseater in the cockpit as a courtesy (and yes, I know that we have no requirement to check our Co e-mail prior to show time). I'm sure there are some nuances to all this that would need to be worked out. All this is contingent on the Feds, the Suits and FDX ALPA all agreeing that this whole idea was legal to begin with.

How about this one?:

We had girlfriends(flight followers, 121 supp) that had a _____, but they weren't our wives(dispatchers, 121 flag/dom).

I believe clap has a the in front of it.;)

True. Those are better analogies. I was only responding to fdx727pilot's examples.

I'm wondering what made you think of that. :D

Regarding GOC......
Prior to approx mid 1995 timeline, the main Ops Control Center was comprised of Systems Control and Flight Control. Flight Control existed only in Memphis, while Systems Control worked alongside them in Memphis and had 3 regional ops centers in OAK, IND, and EWR. In 1995, those departments were merged into one, called Global Operations Control. Subsequently, 2 of the 3 regional centers(OAK and EWR) were closed. Only IND remains as a regional GOC Ops Control Center today. During all those years, whether working under the previous Flight Control or present day Global Operations Control, every FedEx flight had an FAA licensed dispatcher working each flight. Though the rules of 121 Supplemental didn't require an actual dispatcher, FedEx always operated to the higher standard. Now, as a 121 Domestic/Flag carrier, licensed dispatchers are required. There were obvious regulatory changes that came with that switch, but the individuals working the flights always held the Dispatcher ticket as a company requirement to qualify for and perform the job.
