Maybe you should be more concerned about how ol' Lee is gonna explain DPA at the next Exec Board meeting...

........good point!

Every airline has skeletons in the closet

I was asking factually if they had done a crossing prior to the JFK leg... i.e. asking how fatigued they possibly were.

Feel free to read, fire, aim again though. ;)[/QUOTE]

Impossible, cargo pilots don't fatigue..... Haven't you heard?

After 50 years of flying I would have to agree. On Sep 24, 1972 a JAL DC8 landed at Juhu rather the correct airport in Bombay. On Dec 14, 1972 an Interflug(East German) IL18 also landed at Juhu, nearly hitting the JAL DC8.

I guess it depends on your definition of "several"...it was almost 34 years ago.

"there but for the grace of.............."
Wake up 0630am, kids getting ready for school, work in yard all morning, around 3pm take nap, 4pm neighbor gets leaf blower going, nap ends, oh well, it's only a 3hrs flight, 7pm dinner with family, 8pm start packing, shower, etc, 10pm say good byes to family and leave for the 90 mins+ drive to JFK, get to ops around midnite, usual stuff, then wait for ride to the jet, 2am takeoff, finally, 6th cup of coffee, 2hrs. and 6 more cups later brief for arrival, hey, no sweat, hotel bed is less than 90 mins away, wow look to our left and see runway, final check, line up on runway, hmmm?? oh well, lights must be off on ramp, Gov. closed again, 'nice landing Capt.' wow auto brakes off, push those pedals! ***??? Typical night for "freight dogs" 'this is the life you have chosen!'

Except they landed at 9:20 pm central.

Some assumptions here: unlike Delta, etc., Atlas operates all over the world, into less than ideal airfields and in somewhat austere conditions. Other Supplementals do the same, operating into an airfield for the first time, no advance survey team, minimal information, etc. Has Delta operated into Al Asad?

That being said, what if they'd landed at Kinshasa instead of Brazzaville? Or couldn't find a military base in Egypt or Oman that's not on any chart? I would expect a carrier like Atlas would have a little more emphasis in their training in order to avoid the "oops, we made a mistake but don't say anything because it may happen to you".

9:20 CST is what? 0220z. If they did a crossing out of Europe they likely departed at 0900 or 1000z. Even with a full good nights sleep, it's still a long day. I know. I've done them.

A 6000 X 100 foot runway, from a 2-mile final, gives an identical perspective in the windshield as a 9000 X 150 foot runway from a 3-mile final. The gentleman's point is valid.

Yeah... I guess anyone can confuse the difference of A1 and A5 lighting system not to mention the location of the rotating beacon well illustrated on the 10-9 chart of the Jeppy and the Gov. Charts.

No hangars on the east side of KAAO. Soooo? Anyone?

Approach briefings go a long long way especially when there are numerous airports with runways aligned in the same direction in the vicinity.
