Ebola Is Coming. A Travel Ban Won't Stop Outbreaks - Forbes
Believe what you want but this makes more sense to me than trying to implement a travel ban to and from the infected areas. We can't even control our own borders, so how are we supposed to control the borders of these undeveloped countries half a world away? This outbreak also shows how bad we really are at assessing risk. The flu will kill over 30,000 Americans this year, but how many of us don't bother to get a flu shot? Just the other day I was having a conversation with my brother about Ebola and how worried he is over it. This is the same person who is severely allergic to bee stings but rarely carries his EpiPen with him. |

The reference is to a poem that has long been thought to reference plague. The sneeze = Transmission, falling down = dying, posies = cover up the stench of death, then ashes ashes = cremation of the bodies.
Why can?t I find 'ashes to ashes, dust to dust' in the Bible? |

Large expanses of ocean tend to do that I think this is the case here Much, much different than jumping a dried up River in the middle of the night |

It explains how an air travel ban would be counterproductive. If we ban flights then we will hurt the West African economies and make it more difficult for them to receive the aid they need. All this does is hurt their ability to control the spread of this disease. We can close our borders and hope the oceans protect us but what happens if Ebola spreads throughout Africa? How do we stop it from spreading to the Middle East and Asia? Do you think that India and China have the ability to control widespread outbreaks? Imagine billions of potentially infected people trying to escape their countries. I really doubt that any travel bans we institute will help us then. Our best bet is to give the affected countries the help they need now. A ban on flights would do more harm than good. |

U.S. Isn't Done With Ebola - US News Since it is from a leftie site it downplays the results but the bottomline is we go from a 80% probability to a 25% probability of importing more cases over the next 6 months. Think how many innocent nurses can be saved if reduce the probability by two thirds. |
Now is not the time for American hubris to put us into a false sense of security. Despite what the CDC, the news, and our government has said, Ebola can and is spread via "the air."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...00004-0007.pdf "we have shown that Ebola virus (Zaire strain) can be transmitted by aerosol in an experimental primate model" The reason why they're not saying Ebola can be spread through the air is because it hasn't been demonstrated in the wild, only in laboratory conditions. However, the healthcare worker in Dallas, wearing full protective gear, might be the first case. This is why they are now suggesting putting masks on Ebola victims, so they can't cough or sneeze tiny droplets of bodily fluids contaminated with Ebola into the air thus infecting anyone nearby. Flu season is coming up. Lots of people are going to be coughing and sneezing out in public. God help us if we let an outbreak occur during this time. It's quite simple, quarantine anyone who has been to West Africa. Deny anyone who holds a West African nation passport. |
How about a perspective we can all relate to. We purport to be able to 'control' terrorism by searching old, white, wheelchair bound grandmas, but can't handle Obola because it is too much effort to look at travel documents and see if someone has recently travelled in/to West Africa?

I just reread the article -- but this time I read the Comments too I suggest you do the same Many people there poke some significant holes in the authors logic and his faulty analogy that Ebola is like a sinking ship. Clearly the author was never in the Navy. Reread my other posts I think we (the world) should increase funding & human resources to fight the disease in West Africa NOW And also have an immediate travel ban OUT of the country NOW There is immediate, measurable benefit that will reduce the probability the disease will spread in the short term Buy time --- and then figure out the correct protocol for allowing people to travel outside --- this may involve more than simply asking folks questions and taking their temperature --- it may involve an actual, verifiable 3 week quarantine before travel |
