UPS ANC reserve schedules
 
Here is a sample of what reserve schedules look like for those going to ANC as new-hires. The "RA" means the call-out time period (6am to 6pm). The asterisks (*) mean days off. As you can see, the blocks are 15 days long, followed by 13 days off. However, keep in mind that two schedules back-to-back with work at both ends can mean being gone for 30 straight days. Meanwhile, two back-to-back schedules with days off on the ends will give you a 26-day vacation.

Frieght Dog,

Are these the reserve lines for the MD11 at ANC? I was hearing that the company built the lines so they were not commutable however what you show seems very commutable.

Yes, it's just one of many reserve ANC lines.

The hard flying lines (non-reserve) mostly consist of one long trip, and one short trip per month. Which means two commutes every 28 days, as opposed to a reserve schedule with only one commute.

Do you see any significant changes to this reserve schedule as the crew numbers get increased over the next year or so? (i.e. from 1 15 day period to 2 or more shorter periods)

Purely speculation, but I would say "no" to any significant changes. Long blocks of reserve have been available (and mostly go very junior) in widebody fleets/seats for years.

How long would a junior reserve have to bid until he could bid out of? I guess what I'm asking is how long is the lock? Also do you still think the -400 will be only based in ANC or will they split the bases ie SDF

You mean, how long to be able to bid back to another domicile in the lower 48? Depends, but figure at least a year or two if you get an ANC assignment.

The -400 might be opening an SDF domicile in the future, but for now it's all Anchorage- and junior.

No nonstops out of ANC. ANC is only a fuel stop for the big birds going to and from Asia. Alaska volume is also onboard, but in very small quantities compared to the heavy freight and packages destined for Asia-U.S.

We do have a few pilots that live in Europe. No idea how easy it is to commute into trips, though.

Just joined the site--great work-very useful!

I'm in the need for some basic "pilot type" answers re: UPS

1. What's the hiring rate for this year and....?
2. What's the retirements looking like for the next few years?
3. Do newhires get paid while in trng? hotel pd? etc.
4. If you were a 46yr old legacy airline 320 CAP (16yrs at the airline at 130/hr) and had the opp to come to UPS this yr...would ya do it?
(I realize this is a highly subjective question but...)

3)yes. Full pay (33,000), uniform, hotel, and $40+- per diem
4) are you in it for pay, prestige, security, or schedules? That is a hard thing to answer. If it is pay, you'll do better at UPS. Not much prestige to be had if your ego needs such a thing. Job security should be good but upgrade may be a while unless you want to go to ANC. Schedules can be good or bad, depending on your own definitions.

I recently flew with a 20+ year captain from USAir, 52 years old and at UPS for 2 years. He seemed pretty comfortable with his decision.

Why would it take longer than a year? Is it because probation + wait for a displacement bid is the amount of time you would have to wait?

When I was in training as a new hire (10 months ago) there was a former USAir captain who’d just gotten off probation and who was switching from DC8 FE position to B75/76 FO slot. He was just a tad over 50 and spent more than 24 years at USair (might have been the same person 767pilot flew with), he was not furloughed - he resigned. He said his only regret was to have waited this long - one morning he was reading a paper during our break and all of a sudden he said: wow, oil went up $3.00/barrel last night and y’all know what? I just don’t care, doesn’t affect me anymore! Then he smiled and threw the paper away. Don’t know, maybe he was simplifying things a tad but he seem very content with his life, really cool guy.

Thanks so much for your answers...it's basically career security and the restoration of my pension which I lost via the company filing for bankruptcy.

I'm tired of having to read about my career security in the newspapers...seems that UPS is a very profitable company over the prior decades.

Other issue is the possibility of recouping the pay I'd give up to come to UPS; my present airline pays there Captains UPS F/O year 5 wages!!

...and of course, my prior life was C141's so I'm proud to be re-associated with my prior professionals.

Thanks for that nuggett...it's a great help..the ironic part is that I stzrted my post USAF airline career at Piedmont, which was bought by USAir...when things went south there I left to go to UAL...now things went very south (south pole?) and maybe the last U...UPS is the savior?

Basically, aside from the pension at UPS...it looks like I'll be back at my present CAP pay in year 4 as an FO at UPS...

I'm single,,,no prior lives (or wives)...it's just tough making the decision...but you and beaker and 767 sure help..

One last issue....aside from the 2-300 pilot hires this year...what's the next few years look like...and do you know the number of age 60 retirements coming up?

It doesnt look like there will be any age 60 retirements coming up.:eek: But last time I looked at it, it seemed that there was a big group of folks hitting age 60 at around 2010 or so, so just push that back to 2015. As far as expansion, UPS is very conservative compared to FDX. We generally get a few airplanes, most being replacements for the old worn out iron. I dont think one will ever see a huge expansion at UPS, it just seems slow and steady, UPS had just over 2000 pilots in 1996, and 11 years later we have 3000. Its expansion and thats good, but not what I would call explosive. I would anticipate the upgrade to captain (other than ANC) to take around 10 to 12 years average.

There's probably at least one (maybe more) former legacy pilot in most new hire classes. So you'd be in good company ...

In our class alone ...

I was at AWA/USAir West ...
Another was a NWA furloughee ...
Also had a early-retired DAL pilot ...
And I think one from AA as well ...

The ONLY regret I can think of, if you want to call it that ... is that I didn't get here sooner. But that's just my 2 centavos ...
