Miami Air
Does anyone have information on Miami Air, other then the training contract. How long and were training is, are they flying glass and most of all how is it to work for them?

They are a pretty good company to work for... good hotels... good food, and you don't have to worry about being stranded at any location without being taken care of for lack of payment like some other supplemental carriers. However, pay, compared to industry standards, is very low... on a par with regional carrier pay. The turn over is primarily with F/Os, since upgrades are almost stagnent. Their primary income is from the DOD. Miami Air has an airplane dedicated to Martinair. They also share an aircraft with EXCEL, a UK carrier, with crews based in the UK during the summer months. Its a good way to get good right seat international experience on glass cockpit aircraft at lower than industry standard wages.

Don't know if it has changed, but had 2 friends go there and was told its all reserve with 1 1/2 hr call out with 9 hard days off and 2 floating days off. One was called for a short trip and was gone for 3 weeks straight! Has that changed?

Miami Air has a 3 year training contract worth $18K. Currently they are doing sub-service in Amsterdam for Martinair. 2 planes are based there for July and August. They will more than likely be going back again next year. They fly ALL OVERTHE WORLD!!!!!! If you have your 1000 121 PIC and live a simple life and wish to see the world...it is a great place. Keep in mind, the 1000 IS NOT a requirement, but I highly recommend NOT considering Miami Air unless you have it. It is your ticket out should you decide to leave. The in-house union just recently merged with the local Teamsters. The current contract dates back to 98 and the current TA is at a stand-still. You could have the time of your life, but don't expect to get rich doing it. If you aren't familiar with S Florida, get to know it...it can be pricey. There are 2 seniority lists.....1 cpt and 1 FO. The cpt list moves pretty slowly, but the FO list is constantly moving. If you are an FO at a regional....stay where you are!!!!!

This policy of 24 hours of reserve doesnt fly at our FAA airline headquarters. Our POI claims there has to be a 8 hour rest period in the 24 hours, what happens if you just went to bed and they call you, you are supposed to be fit for a 16 hour duty day? If you guys arent all that thrilled about pulling 24 hours of reserve not knowing when you can sleep you should poke around the Louisville Flight Standards District office... they dont allow it.

24 Hour Standby.
No schedule. Short staff pilots. 9 Days off per month. Terrible Pay. 32k - 1st year. 34K second and so on....... 3 year $18k (we will go after you !!!!) training contract. No benefits. Ask about their health care!!! No jumpseat. Won't participate in CASS. Must live in Miami Area. No end in sight for a new contract. Regular 16+ duty days. Can extend you for 19. And commercial you for 22!!! Likes to play the part 91 ferry game. Crappy Hotels. If you've ever liked having a schedule or like to know what days you will have off next month you will dread this place. Talk to a current non-management pilot before you drink the Kool Aid. |
know somebody working there, so far I've heard nothing good. Always on call, crappy pay and you'll be stuck there 3 years. I guess it can't get much worst than that.
