Rest period is your period, but we ask for the courtesy of using good judgement. We always try to give at the very minimum a 4 hour notice, and we pay salary. We also are happy to cover a drink or two during a meal during their rest period as part of per diem.
That sounds very generous and probably a reasonable policy for an office exec. However, if I infer correctly that during “rotations” a pilot is expected to be sober and fit for flying duty between 3am and 6 pm, you could be asking for problems.

It gives enough time to sober up between 3am and 9am if there was a last minute trip to come up it would (95%) arise before 6pm. Obviously if the flight crew is expecting a trip they are expected to not drink before it.

I had a friend that worked for a large part 91 corporation. He had to be ready to go 8-5, M-F. After 5, he was free until the next workday at 8AM, unless something was scheduled in advance. If they were scheduled for a weekend flight, they would get a day off the next week for each weekend day worked. However, I never knew him to fly without knowing his schedule several days in advance.

I think just treating people fairly with reasonable rules goes a long way towards retaining good people.

That has to be fairly nice. We have 3 planes, one is based on the west coast with a flight crew of 6 (3 per rotation) plus 2 cabin attendants. East we have presently two heavy aircraft as well, we have 10 pilots (5 per rotation). While it is quite rare for a trip to be last minute there are occasions it happens and as I said, it mostly is before 6pm. I can only think of one occasion last year when we had a reason to do otherwise and that involved a car accident with a loved one. The year before I decided to get away from the stress for a weekend and decided to head out on short notice and I want to say we had two trips for our crisis response team (emergency business advisory).

I am certainly open to suggestion and tweaking things if you have a better way. I came to the forum to learn and try to understand the pilot/flight department side of things.
