Default Contracting and landing currency

For those of you who do only contract flying for a job, how do you stay 90 day landing current? Most contract gigs are right seat and not flying. After 90 days your landing currency will run out and then that really limits your contracting opportunities, as I have learned first hand. Obviously you cant do recurrent every 90 day. What do people do in this situation? I know three landings in the jet is required. or sim

You don’t need currency if you’re not acting as PIC. If you’re acting as PIC and not allowed to land the airplane, you have other issues.

As SIC you only need to be 12 month current but a lot of operators want the SIC to be 90 day current as well and if not will not employ you as a contractor. Even though you are technically legal by the FAR.

Well, if an operator requires 90 day currency, and you never touch the flight controls, you have a problem. If you have any regular clients, then tell them you need to maintain landing currency and ask to swap legs or something.

How does one become a contract pilot only flying part time and/or cherry picking trips with multiple companies? I assume you are a independant contractor? I assume you pay for you own annual recurrent Sim? Where do these pilots look for jobs? Where do the companies that need a co-pilot for a particular trip look for contract help?

Research "Pilot Available" websites. They are out there, but I don't know specific groups.

You won't get a lot of info from contract pilots. They (rightfully) keep info close to the vest. You pay for your own recurrent and you network like a fiend to develop your "book" of clients. Hopefully that book is reliable and consistent.

I have dabbled in contracting and would love to do it full time but, I haven't made the jump. Having a guaranteed paycheck and hard days off would be hard to give up.

Worst case, rent a piston twin for 25 minutes and do 3 landings. Add that cost into you contact rate for those who don't let you fly.

The 3 TO/Landings have to be in the same type if the aircraft requires a type rating.

Most were working for someone with that aircraft full time, and for whatever reason are no longer doing so. Some did contract work on the side, built a rapport with several operators, and used that to springboard into doing it full time. We have a list of regulars we will call on both aircraft when we need a little extra help, and those who we never call based on whatever reason.
