Default New job question...

I may have a new job flying freight in a cessna 402. I also just got an email from Great Lakes saying give us a call to schedule an interview.

The freight job will pay a little more than double the first year FO pay at lakes. In Fact it will pay more than a first year Captain at Lakes.

My question is, when the economy picks back up and people start hiring again, would it be hard to move on to bigger and better things if i had around 3000 hours with around 1500 multi, since i wouldnt have any turbine time???

My goals are cargo, corporate, or fractional.

I see airlines is not in your career goals, so that makes it a simpler question. The 402 experience could move you into a mid level freight job, say an Empire type job where you could hopefully be qualified for the next rung of the ladder. You'll need turbine time somewhere along the line and the 402 job will get you there. Also, it could get you to an entry level corporate or 135 turbine F/O job which could move you into a frac or good left seat corp job someday. So, no, I wouldn't feel the need to go to a Lakes for nothing more than career advancement reasons.

I'd say Lakes would be the place to go for the low time guy who DOESN'T want to do 135 freight or who is drawn to Lakes for other reasons.

Thanks for the insight 727...the 121 airlines are not for me...Southwest, FedEx, and UPS are attractive, but other than those I do not care to touch 121. Although I do respect the GLA pilots...their flying is as hard as it gets in the airline world. I am currently at an odd place...with 1700 total 520 multi with 135 experience...I have been told I was too qualified for flight instructing, and not many other 135 ops have been hiring at least with my time. It looks like I have a job...but I don't believe anything until it's already happened.

I was in the same situation as you when I graduated from college in may of 07. I had about 2000tt/600 multi. I went to Chautauqua for a little over a year and left with about 700 turbine for a pic job on a king air based at home. That's where I'm at now. My ultimate goal is Netjets followed by swa, fdx or ups in no particular order. If I were you I'd get some turbine Multi. You've got enough piston time. Lakes would be good for the quick upgrade. I applied for a street capt position there and was called for an interview but landed the king air job first.

I have to agree. It seems that the 402 job really is just more of the same for you. As long as you can stand the low pay, go for the turbine. Upgrade and get some turbine PIC. It'll serve you well anywhere and - who knows - you might change your mind about what you want in a career. Needless to say, don't dump the 402 job until you've got an offer from Great Lakes ...

If I was younger and single, I'd probably take the job in the 402. Single pilot IFR twin PIC xc time... Since I am almost 34 and am married with kids, I am thinking that the next step must be for turbine experience. I already have enough piston time (almost 1100 TT & 300 ME).
The big question, where can you afford to go? I personally can't afford Great Lakes, although the flying would be fun and upgrade might be quick.

Literally, "the horns of a dilemma". I feel your pain.

Single pilot IFR twin PIC xc time.
This should count for something in a job interview. Sadly, in most places piston time doesn't count for much.

Yup. You're literally paying (through a lower salary) for flight time that's "star quality". Turbine PIC gets you the attention, even though the SP IFR stuff is a bit more challenging. Sad.

What other aircraft are flown by this 402 operator?

I don't think you can discount the networking of sitting around the FBO if you're looking to stay in the corporate world. I know quite a few people that were flying pistons and got jobs just from talking to somebody in the pilot lounge.

If it were me, I think I'd take the 135 gig.

I'll throw in my 2 cents, and I agree that the 402 job seems best for your current situation. Single Pilot IFR doing 135 ops is very challenging at times, but overall it's a great skill building experience and allows you to truly become "the man." The problem though is you are the only voice in the operation of the aircraft, so sole responsibility can be too much or too tempting for some individuals. Just remember to keep that little voice in the back of your head alive.

Hey thanks for the insight all...

I just found out that IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF I get the job I will get opportunities to ride along in a King Air 200. I will be flying with the chief pilot next week on the freight run in the 402.
